This reminds me of Merkel’s supposed reaction after Putin was invited to speak in the Bundestag and made a very amicable and agreeable speech. When someone was like “see, he isn’t so bad” she supposedly said something along the line “see, that’s how they (ex-secret service) always are… until they aren’t”. She spoke from her experience in the GDR.
