First rule: Don’t believe anything coming from terrorist country Russia! They are trying everything to destabilize Europe. Don’t let that happen. Putin to hell!
People often misunderstand how these sanctions are supposed to work. The point isn’t to crush and destroy the economy of russia, but to cause enough problems for aquisition of advanced technology that could be used for missiles and tank production to make the production of these systems unfeasible
Mind you, russia still uses a lot of foreing technology on their systems, mostly microelectronics and sensors because they can’t make their own that can even remotely compete with western parts.
If sanctions don’t hurt then why is Putin and his army of trolls always moaning about them?
Russia: Sanctions don’t hurt us.
also Russia: demands removing of sanctions at every opportunity.
They have the same alcoholic smile lol
I don’t understand what the excuse/reason is for the populists to love Russia so much in Europe. Of course the politicians do it because they are paid by Russia, but how are the populist voters convinced to buy into the Russia-loving? How are e.g. Germans thinking that they would benefit from supporting Putin’s Reich?
The 2014 sanctions undoubtedly hurt European agriculture, and forced Russia to modernise it’s
The present sanctions haven’t put a stop to this war,or made any noticeable impact in slowing it…..not that they should be repealed nor am I against a boycott…..but euro leaders would been better served with practical military assistance on the ground
The implication in the first statement seems to be that if it is true that then sanctions should be stopped? Weird logic.
If it’s true, the only thing that matters is the absolute value of economic damage not relative. EU’s GDP in market exchange rates is about 11x times higher than Russia’s, and about 4-5 times at purchasing power parity. For purposes of an economic war where energy/materials play a big role, which are exchanged at market rates; the nominal value makes the most sense to use. Still, in some aspects the PPP value makes the most sense(comparing say the domestic produce of farmers for domestic consumption).
In any case, Europe would have to be suffering ~5-12x times more from sanctions than Russia is if you wanted to argue that sanctions are doing more damage than good.
In terms of growth levels, Russia is being propped up by its war economy; while EU(namely Germany) has lost quite a bit of industrial output; so there Russia has an advantage. In terms of stockpiles of cash, nothing has changed substantially for Europe, while Russia has drained 50% of its sovereign fund. After 2-3 years more of this level of war economy, Russia will have to take drastic steps to continue the war. Lower social spending, nationalize a lot more of the economy, sell/loan land or resources rights, etc. EU isn’t going to be doing anything like that any time soon.
In 2021 EU exported to Russia goods for 90 billions. The idea that an entity with a GDP of 19 trillions is feeling the hit because of that is laughable (and that is assuming all EU countries completely stopped trading with Russia).
When it comes to the imports of gas from Russia, EU won that battle considering that it is now mostly independent from russian imports, gas prices fell to pre-covid levels and i doubt anybody in the EU had to eat hamster soup during winter
On the other hand Russia entered war economy.
How would it hurt EU?
It gives norway an amazing opportunity to sell natural gas until the countries become self sufficient or start using hydrogen as a substitute. Countries like Denmark already produce biomethane enough to cover 40% of it’s entire gas needs and plans on hutting 100% in 2030. In my opinion Russia just proved to the whole EU that going green is a valuable strategy not just for the environment but also as a way to boost the economy instead of the russian.
I really don’t get why a party that is pro-russia is automatically branded as populist. We can support Ukraine and shit on LP & co, but diving into these debate cancelling automations is a slippery slope which brings us closer to what we claim to despise
Sanctions hurt the bottom line of the pro-Russia parties, therefore it must be hurting Europe more. /s
