Thirty years on, Soviet crimes in Afghanistan must not be forgotten

  1. In the 1980s (Afghan years 1359-68), **the Soviet Red Army and its allied Afghan army committed massive war crimes and crimes against humanity**, intentionally targeting civilians and civilian areas for attack, killing prisoners, and torturing and murdering detainees.

  2. The Soviet army killed and drove off civilians, and used scorched earth tactics to prevent their return. They used booby traps, mines, and chemical substances throughout the country, The Soviet army indiscriminately killed combatants and noncombatants to ensure submission by the local population.

    The provinces of [Nangarhar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nangarhar_Province), [Ghazni](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghazni), [Lagham](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laghman_Province), [Kunar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunar_Province), [Zabul](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zabul_Province), [Qandahar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandahar), [Badakhshan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badakhshan_Province), [Lowgar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logar_Province), [Paktia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paktia_Province) and [Paktika](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paktika_Province) witnessed extensive depopulation programmes by the Soviet forces.

The Soviet forces abducted Afghan women in helicopters while flying in the country in search of mujahideen. In November 1980, a number of such incidents had taken place in various parts of the country, including Laghman and Kama. Soviet soldiers as well as [KhAD](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KHAD) agents kidnapped young women from the city of [Kabul](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabul) and the areas of Darul Aman and [Khair Khana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khair_Kh%C4%81na), near the Soviet garrisons, to rape them.

There was an outcry against the press in the Soviet Union for depicting the Soviet “war heroes” as “murderers”, “aggressors”, “rapists” and “junkies”.

Nothing ever changed there and nothing will ever changed. Meanwhile some Westoids depict the russian troops as “poor soldiers coerced to go to war”. Scorched Earth, rapes, mass murderers, torturers, kidnappings, are acts of coerced soldiers?

  3. Everywhere, where Russians go, they murder, they kill and they lie. Russians out of Ukraine! Now!

  4. 2024 Russia deserves to face a penal court, but this article and headline feel weird, not gonna lie.
Afghanistan got fucked by soviets, by americans and now by talibans. I’m not sure who’s worse. But everyone has been a douchebag here

  5. I get what you are trying to do, but sadly nobody cares.

  6. Don’t forget the American and of course Talibans and all the hooligans terrorists. They just never catch a break.

  7. The U.S. trained, funded, and amplified right-wing militias/religious extremist groups/movements as a proxy fight against the soviets making the conflict far more violent and dangerous for all involved. Those exact groups later grew and evolved into ISIS, Taliban, and Al Queda. The U.S. then spent 20 years occupying the region, fighting something they created. They bombed entire cities to the ground, and killed 4.5 million people. Maybe put things in perspective a little.

Edit: [here is a article explaining how the U.S. trained militant extremists like Osama Bin Laden and it later “came home to roost”](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/wbna3340101)

  8. We have already forgotten crimes from yesterday…..30 years back!

Don’t know how many were slaughtered yesterday

  9. All that destroying the DRA accomplished was the descent of Afghanistan into warlordism, and the rise of the Taliban.

  10. Yeah but let’s forget US bombing of weddings and indiscriminate killings of journalists

  11. american crimes in afghanistan must not be forgotten either you fuckin hypocrites

  12. We shouldn’t forget our own war crimes in Afghanistan!

And ours weren’t 30 years ago!

  13. russians looted the shit out of the afghans. Typical russian doctrine if its not carved into a mountain side-steal it

  14. I always cringe when Russians rant about the American interventionism

  15. Lmfao soviet crimes?! this some propaganda bullshit. What about everyone else’s war crimes. This sub is trash and a part of the propaganda machine. I hope Reddit dies soon. It’s worthless to me now.

Unsubscribe from this sub to save yourself. Fucking puppets

If you want to downvote. Explain why you did. You can’t

  16. Tbh i prefer them to the “freedom fighters” they fought lmao

  17. You notice the what about America people never talk about soviets in Afghanistan?

  18. And of course, half of the comments is the *what about Amerikkka* kind of stuff.

What I specifically love about this is that I’m yet to see an actual post about the USA riddled with *what about Russia* replies. Somehow, this never happens. Russians and their Western fanbois seem to be the only group of people who don’t like to talk about object of their passion. America, Israel, Germany, Baltic countries — they are willing to talk about literally anything but their beloved Russia.

    Anyways, fuck Russia.

  19. Lmao they definitly can, our “freedom fighters” brought us so much worst

  20. Soviet crimes against humanity everywhere must never be forgotten

  21. Unfortunately nothing will happen to Russia. The West will forget all that they’ve done.

  22. Tankies and pro-Putin trolls love to criticize the US occupation of Afghanistan and its failure, but forget the fact that the Soviets killed 2 million Afghan civilians in 9 years (while losing too) compared to 46K under US occupation in almost 20 years. (Not that the US is good, but it doesn’t make Russia better.)

  23. Wow, these comments are littered with pro-Kremlin propagandists who are trying to whitewash Soviet/Russian crimes by using pathetic whataboutist tactics…

  24. But they are. Just at the moment Putijn has used Iran to provoke Hamas in a giant maskirovska. The woke in the West have been reeled in like fish on a line.
