“20-35 per cent cheaper than the average market rent in the capital […] for those who don’t qualify for social housing and aren’t in a position to buy a home”
I’d be immensely grateful if someone offered me that deal. Do these people just assume rents could remain frozen forever? The 9% hike (only for some) barely covers inflation over the last few years.
How delusional do you have to be to call this “social cleansing”. You’re getting a discount of hundreds of pounds a month. Be thankful.
I understand their concern, not sure if I’d call it social cleansing. I’m a key worker too but don’t qualify for this scheme and had to move out of Hackney because my rent went up by 15%.
>A spokesperson for Peabody said: “We appreciate that no rent increase is ever welcome. For more than half of residents living on the former Crown Estates, rents will stay the same or increase by an average of 5.4 per cent.”
Most people would be delighted if their rent only increased by 5%
British culture is seeing people suffer because of rent increases and then bemoaning them because theirs were even higher… this is what’s wrong with our country…

I’d have loved a 9% rise, mine went up 20%.
