Literally blocking plans that would benefit themselves? Have we reached the NIMBY singularity?
Is the building not listed? It should be if it’s not its gorgeous.
They just want windows that keep th character of the building.
I think the real objection to this, is summed up with this “sliding windows and install tilt and turn”. They want to maintain the original asthmatics of the building, and tilt and turn windows will significantly impact the façade of it. However it’s idiotic to keep insufficient windows for the sake of aesthetics, and I suspect the Reason they can’t just install new sliding windows is due to regulations. If the regulation allows for it, just install triple glazed sliding windows. If not, they could at least try and match the originals as best as possible.
> “It would give it different reflections from all different angles.”
The ones interviewed sound insane enough to all agree to keep the windows closed and go around with a spirit level to enforce this.
I wonder how many objections are from flat owners themselves? Forced into paying for replacement windows at significant cost
People are so stupid it hurts my brain. The older the stupider it seems recently. “It’s always been this way” is just about the dumbest argument in the book. “It never hurt us before” fails to recognise all the people that died who have no voice.
So.
Stupid.
I can’t believe an architecture style called fucking BRUTALIST managed to take hold and, you know, exist
I kinda get it. They want new windows but they want the new windows to be the same style as the old ones rather than the type of windows you get in hotels where you can’t actually open them.
These the same fucking people who go on about “Back when I were a child we didn’t have double glazing we just put a woolly jumper on” as if that means nobody is allowed upgrades to their outdated home because they had a rough do of it like 60 years ago. Smelly bastards.
just demolish that monster and replace it with a modern building
“One resident even claims he will try to electrocute anyone who tries to replace his windows.” WTF?!
Britain: we have shit, cold houses
Also Britain: if you replace my rotten 60 year old windows I’ll electrocute you
Like… zero sympathy. People bitch about new builds being soulless and boring, but I’m sat in one now in shorts and a t shirt quite comfortably. My gas bill is single digits per week as well.
The heating fired this morning and hasn’t been on since – rather that than Mr. Sparky in his mouldy concrete box with windows rotting out of the building.
It’s not even a passivhaus or anything like that, it’s just a well insulated house built to modern regs.
It’s not fucking iconic. Stop calling everything and everyone iconic.
I live in a listed building. Early 1800s cottage, and I am desperate to change the windows. Council point blank refused. I offered to match them exactly with bespoke like for like frames and use a special ultra thin glazing for heat and noise retention. Nope, you’ll just have to be cold. The wood is rotten, and crumbling but nope. Bastards
Reading around, one of the other occupants opposed to the new windows is Tracey Emin (the artist of unmade bed fame); while an article from over a decade ago suggested that most flats had secondary glazing.
Apparently, there’s a mixture of tenancies in the block, which complicates the project, while last year there were the inevitable issues with broken lists. Although the block looks dirty grey now, apparently there are flints embedded in the concrete panels, so when it first opened, it gleamed white.
A few minutes of cursory searching and I haven’t yet turned up any images of the proposed new windows, so can’t assess how different they actually would look.
The frame will be thicker front to back and in thickness this is due to steel frames being very thin but normally with a timber frame surround.
The edge will barely change the main difference will be the frame visible in the middle of the windows. Due to the height I would expect restriction devices will be used to prevent the windows opening to far, but can be opened further in an emergency or for cleaning.
Colour can be chosen to match existing.
Things to consider
Seems pretty reasonable to want replacement windows that don’t look like shit
Lonely bored guy just found a new way to pass the time.
Don’t see why the new windows cant be custom made to look like the old ones?….oh forgot there is no money.
It reminds me of few building in london southbank infested with criminals
Man who believes it never did him any harm, was in fact harmed.
Classic Reddit. If the people who actually live in the block want to keep the windows, who gives a fuck what Reddit randoms who think they know better say.
The building is ugly as fuck and would look better if it was a big pile of rubble. What is there to preserve exactly?
I can’t understand how anybody could associate this style with any form of character. The place needs ripping down, not just the windows. It’s an eyesore.

I’ve stayed in that block
It’s not just cold. It’s brutally cold.
The redevelopment of Sheffield’s [Park Hill](https://www.dezeen.com/2022/12/15/mikhail-riches-park-hill-estate-sheffield/) flats shows that sympathetic refurbishment of such buildings can be done.
