I’ve been living in this neighbourhood for about 10 years now. The escalators worked intermittently before but… they at least worked sometimes. 4 years ago they shut it all down to revamp them completely and reopened the escalators late last year. A couple of months later they’re shut down again!!! Does anyone know why they can’t just FIX them?!

> The station was constructed as part of a PFI-funded extension which opened in 1999 extending the line from Island Gardens to Lewisham.

> Being PFI, responsibility for stations was in the hands of a private company rather than TfL. The PFI is now over, and TfL claim that upon taking over discovered that “escalators were in a much worse state than anticipated”.
Probably not.
There are some rope ladders that could be borrowed from a museum nearby.
There’s maybe more chance the Cutty Sark will return to the high seas!
I thought the exact same thing this morning when I saw they were out. I don’t understand why it takes 4 years to fix an escalator. I noticed a few weeks ago that they started making that unbearable sound of squeaking metal, so probably not a good sign.
