After many experiences of shitty bosses I decided to follow the maxim “Life is too short to put up with arseholes”. I’m much happier now.
I’m fortunate in not having kids and only having to worry about myself. But I experienced many toxic workplaces, where it was “”usual practice” for the company’s employees to swear and have “heated conversations” with each other”. These are places full of bullying incompetents. It took a toll on me.
Yeah, he’s getting paid out. I know people that would have gone absolutely nuts on their boss if this happened to them.
I hired and supervise a woman who works remotely. She’s exceedingly well qualified for a role that is somewhat niche and hard to fill and her work is uniformly excellent. She has never missed a deadline or given me any issues at all, she is basically a dream employee.
During the interview process she indicated that it was important to her if possible to pick up her children at school each day. It would take twenty minutes out of her day and she offered to make up the time by working later each day. I had no problem with this arrangement and still don’t.
My manager, who is the classic boomer who should’ve retired years ago (and has one child whom he abandoned who is now an adult from whom he is mostly estranged) said to me recently, “There aren’t many places that would give (name of employee) the leeway to collect her children, that’s an outstanding perk and I hope she’s grateful.”
Fwiw, I work for a progressive transnational NGO. And I just thought, we really haven’t come as far as we think we have.
We somehow want everyone to work and raise kids without the two ever clashing. Make wages better, accept flexible working or subsidise childcare more.
I mean isn’t this just saying the quiet part out loud? We’re well aware employers see their staff as economic units and nothing more.
You think we care about your kids’ school run as much as you do? Just because you let some useless tosser blow his beans up your muff? Well done. Merry Fucking Christmas

Used to work very briefly for a dickhead like this. When I put in for time off during Easter holidays to cover child care, he said “get a baby sitter” I went to look for a new job that afternoon. When I handed in my noticed he offered to double my salary because they couldn’t lose me. Still left, within 6 months pretty much everyone did, boomers are almost done witb
Wtf was he meant to do with his kids then, drag them into the office, or to go on the delivery with him if he did it himself? What a fucking horrible place to work!
aren’t children capable of making their own way to school now, infants school aside.
You can take this notion and extrapolate it to, work from home, look after ageing parents – have a life that extends beyond making a business money. But because we lack the collective rights to strike back, bosses have no fear. The pandemic showed us how we can reorganise – but many businesses chose to be scared rather than help make a better workforce. Let’s return to the old broken ways
