“Our nuclear capacity gives us security”: Emmanuel Macron says in response to the nuclear threat brandished by Putin

1. Ohhhhhhhhh fuck, France is a first strike policy nation, meaning under very minimal circumstance threat they will 100% make sure to go first.

2. I like this. He was asked if our nuclear status meant we are more threatened by Putin. He immediately said ‘it means we are more protected’. It is the only correct answer and I admit that in his shoes I would have missed that and actually answered whether France is more at risk. He flipped the logic from threat to security. This is the mindset Europe needs. 👍

3. This is big, because France’s nuclear posture is uniquely cold-blooded and terrifying.

   Most modern plans for nuclear war actually try to avoid targetting cities, because after it’s all over you need someone to talk to, and because that’s the best way of maintaining a credible nuclear deterrent. How’s that? Well, the whole theory of MAD was based on the idea of nuclear winter csused by the injection of soot from burning- ideally firestorming- cities. If you avoid *that*, the thinking goes, you avoid the whole MAD trap. So by lessening the chsncd of it, you increase the credibility of a threatened retaliation: if your retaliation won’t destroy the world, you’re more likely to actually *do* it in the press.

   France is different. They’ve always acknowledged that their warhead count was insufficient for that kind of high-volume strike, but it’s *plenty* to destroy, say, the ten biggest cities in Russia and wipe out 20-60% of their total population. France’s attitude has always been “If you shoot at our people, we shoot at your continued existance.” They even removed their nukes from NATO combined control in order to pursue this policy. From an American President, this statement would be significant, a bit of “come on then, if you think you’re hard enough.” From a French President, especially given Macron’s recent comments, this is a sharply-pointed threat.
