  3. It’s absolutely comical what a sham of an election this is going to be.

    There’s a [report on the BBC News’s website](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-68543919) which has some interaction with one of the other candidates.

    > “It’s not for me to say,” Mr Kharitonov replied. “That wouldn’t be right.”

    > “But do you think your manifesto is better than Putin’s?” I continued.

    > “But what do you think?”

    > “It doesn’t matter what I think. It’s up to the voters.”

    > Instead of talking up himself, Mr Kharitonov praised the incumbent.

    > “Today Vladimir Putin is trying to solve a lot of the problems of the 1990s, when Yeltsin dragged Russia into wild capitalism,” said Mr Kharitonov. “He’s trying to consolidate the nation for victory in all areas. And this will happen!”

    > Something tells me Nikolai Kharitonov’s heart isn’t in this race.

    And that’s one of the few alternative candidates nominally standing against Putin.

    This is a joke, right? This little man is a horrible, horrible little man. I bet his kids even laugh at him. I don’t think the peasants and the babushka’s care for him very much but don’t have the means to take him out. His inner circle should make him a cup of tea

  27. “Foes” is a strong way to say “political challengers.”

    Foe implies they have ill will towards him, but political challengers imply that they have a healthy, democratic process. Foe is probably the right way to say it.
