I met him once, he was in full costume outside Kwiksave in Driffield, East Yorkshire.
He was just stood there, doing a random meet and greet for a local charity. I was about six and at the time and I remember being shocked how posh his real voice was. I don’t think I’d ever met anyone without a Yorkshire accent at that point.
Now it strikes me what a selfless thing that was to do. On a rainy Saturday, for no other reason that he had been asked by the charity.
His doppelganger works in an auto electrical warehouse in Hayes, even has the same facial tick.
Magic!
I watched the entire run of Heartbeat last year on ITVX, it was surprisingly enjoyable now i’m in my thirties and without that dread of Monday to follow. Wonders of modern technology, you can watch it any time.
Most episodes are just fun light TV. Not like watching most modern TV dramas where it’s depressing and dark every episode. Sure there was crime every week but it was usually pretty mild, only the very rare heavy sexual assault/bad injuries/ill-health/death episodes to bring you down.
That was half the episode, then the other half was Claude and later Vernon as the loveable rogue running a money making scheme that always went wrong for the super light hearted and usually comedy moments, with dippy David as his sidekick. Even though he’s usually up to no good he’s still got a good heart and helps bring down the real gangsters, helps old ladies delivering their eggs.
I liked Vernon more than Claude because he rarely did anything intentially illegal/wrong, no poaching, he just got in with the wrong people/schemes. Peggy was the final character in that role and started out pretty nasty but became just about loveable by the end.
Sure it was never going to win any acting or writing awards, it was pretty formulaic (Spoiler, it’s pretty much never the obvious suspect), but as something to just watch a few episodes every now and then to relax I really enjoyed it.
Lived near me in shenstone
🤣🤣🤣🤣 i always say this to my mates the theme tune still gives me chills .
My FiL still watches Heartbeat (each to their own and all that) and if I’m round the in-laws and hear the theme tune I still get a sense of melancholy at 37 years old.
It must be Pavlovian at this point.
What a fucking legend.
Oh god, Sunday nights, chilling, and then, from the front room… ‘Heeeaaarrrtbeat!’
Mm.
He got thrown out by his wife for spending more time with alcohol than her, apparently, and having befriended a housemate of mine, spent rather too long sleeping on the sofa of our shared house.
In real life, he wasn’t particularly lovable.
This picture just fills me with the dread of Maths and Double Physics in the morning.
Hah! That’s so true! Sunday night tv before school! That dreaded feeling! Used to enjoy it, but less so when Nick Berry left.
What other Sunday night pre-school shows was there? London’s Burning was one, it was a really good show. 9-10pm, then off to bed!
I used to know his Grandaughter and she got me a signed photo
Just went cold reading that. So true… Sunday dread when that tune played 😬
*”Heartbeat, why do you miss when my baby kisses me?”*
This line always completely baffled me when I was a wee lad. What’s the scenario here?
Tales of the Unexpected was my ‘it’s school in the morning’ show. I can still hear the theme tune now.
Sadly yeah its true. Love this show watched every series growing up and watch again now. but as soon as the credits rolled it was bath, final bit of homework, grt uniform ready and then bed.
My sister felt so overwhelmingly sorry for him for some reason that it went full circle and became her first crush. I’ve never let her forget this.
