Michael Gove said to be on leadership ‘manoeuvres’ by courting Tory MPs at dinner

  1. I wonder… we’ve all been assuming it was Cummings that’s been the driving force behind these leaks, but could it have been Gove’s second attempt at worming his way in all along?

  2. Esther McVey is someone who doesn’t get spoken about a lot. She’s head of a very influential working group of Conservatives, has very little baggage as part of this current govt, voted to leave the EU, and is fairly popular with the grassroots. Gove and Patel are not election winners. Gove has Ed Miliband vibes, and Patel has put all her eggs in the Boris basket… she owes him. Sunak is too new and I don’t think his fiscal policies so far resonate with the grassroots. Truss is the insider favourite to me, but if Boris does resign, I think the party will stay well clear of anyone associated with the Boris govt… and Truss is right at the top.

  3. He has already failed so many times though. Besides, I don’t think he wants to be leader, not earnestly at least. I think he wants to stay at the front of the party and have a position of influence, which is easier the longer he stays part of the inner circle. He is also useful for trotting out and saying something awful to distract the public from whatever the PM has or has not done that is currently attracting ire. Gove is never going to be PM but he will remain a senior Tory MP for a long time now.

  4. I’m sure he was in the running when Cameron and May stepped down, if so he’s lost out twice now to Theresa May and Boris Johnson which leaves me wondering how bad he actually will be.
