No surprise they don’t have the guts to fight an election, and they don’t want to bee in opposition knowing they can stick their nose in the trough.
I think this is the highest number of MPs stepping down on living memory.
They’ll be lots of them leaving the sinking ship looking for another trough to get their noses into
>says he will stand down as MP at next election
If there ever bloody is one.
His seat goes libdem at the election so this is just walking away rather than losing
Tory minister knowing, might actually have to start working for a living, goes in search of another source of free lunches.
Prioritising his ~family~.
My arse.
*Prioritising his Family*
Where have we heard thay before?
All these rats fleeing the already sunk ship that is the Tory Party are just doing so because it looks better on their post Politics CV to have not gone for re-election rather than being thrown out of office.
*He said, while it was a “painful decision” not to contest the election, he wanted to “prioritise my family and pursue a different career”.*
Which I guess translates as “I want to start job hunting before I lose the current one”.
He had nearly a 10,000 majority at the last election, but that’s hardly looking insurmountable these days. And his constituency has elected a Lib Dem MP in the not too distant past (2010).
Got be amused by all these Tory MPs trying to act like leaving at the next election is a choice *they* are making.
If anyone fancies the experience of running for election: I reckon the Tories will take anyone now. Just put out some tweets about how much you hate trans/muslim people and they’ll probably come to you.
How honourable. Standing down when you’ve just been told you’re fired
Imagine if Labour had been in power for a decade and a half, everything was in the state it was currently in, there was a looming election ahead that was clearly going to be a disaster, and what we then saw was getting close to half of the sitting Labour MPs saying they’re not even going to try fighting for their seats, while at the same time rushing through a quick doubling of the funds that MPs get when leaving office to help them transition back to civilian life. Do you think the media would be as quiet and blasé about that as they are currently being?
As soon as it looks like they might have to put in some actual effort to get re-elected they just give up and run off. Nice to know the tories take public service so seriously
That’s _such_ a shit web site on mobile I gave up even trying to find the content behind the ads.
Can’t say I would want to spend weeks trying to run a campaign I would inevitably lose either
This begs the question who will be the most high profile Tory MP to lose their seat in the election?
most seem to be stepping down before they are defeated – it seems Jeremy Hunt will announce he is not standing to avoid the defeat.
My bet is on Jacob Rees-Mogg
Jokes on you peasants we decide there won’t be a next election.
Its funny really, because I rekon they’re doing it because they’re pretty sure they’re going to get so trounced they’ll lose their deposits then have gleeful journos asking them how they feel about being universally reviled.
His new constituency (made up mostly of Wells where he’s currently the MP) is projected to go from the Tories to the Lib Dems.
He’s leaving Parliament because he knows he’s likely to lose anyway and he doesn’t give enough of a shit about anything he claims to stand for to contest an election unless it’s for a safe seat where no one else has any chance of winning.
Voting record of James Heappey in Parliament:
voted against laws to promote equality and human rights;
voted for restricting the scope of legal aid;
voted against UK membership of the EU;
voted against a right to remain for EU nationals already in living in the UK;
voted against more EU integration;
voted against higher taxes on banks;
voted for reducing capital gains tax;
voted for increasing the rate of VAT;
voted against measures to prevent climate change;
voted for reducing the rate of corporation tax;
voted for requiring the mass retention of information about communications;
voted for mass surveillance of people’s communications and activities;
voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits;
voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability;
As one can see, not a politician that has voted in the interests of the people. Only the wealthy and corporate giants. One for the dustbin of political shysters and arse-holes that have made the UK a much worse place to live and work. Good riddance.
1) Is he sure he had milked all monetary value from his current position?
2) Has he already prepared this by reaching out to various multiple billion dollar companies declaring his interest to be in the board of advisories.
3) Has he already submitted his application to the the House of Lords?
4) When he says step down, does he really mean that he’s aware he’s got no chance of maintaining his seat and therefore will wait until the next election and just not register his position again?
HOORAY! as one of his constituents, I’m very happy about this.
I for one believe that our plan is working
Rishi Sunak about a moth ago , comenting the situation of the Conservative Party…
I’d at least try and stick around if only for the House Of Lords claret, it really is outstanding.
Once saw him walking through Wells’ marketplace; I suspect that effort was close to the sum total of their contribution to the constituency.
