Nato chief denounces Trump’s remarks on defence spending as ‘undermining’ alliance

The whole idea of NATO is that an attack on one Ally will trigger the response from the whole Alliance and long and as long as we stand behind that message together uh we prevent any military attack on uh any Ally so the purpose of NATO is to prevent war is to preserve

Peace is to prevent an attack on NATO allies and we have done so successfully for decades uh because our deterence is credible so any suggestion that we are not standing up for each other that we are not going to protect each other that does undermine the security of All of Us

Increasing the risks and therefore it is so important that we both in actions but also in words communicate clearly that uh we stand by NATO’s commitment to protect and defend all allies

Nato’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, has denounced remarks by former president Donald Trump on the defence spending of the US’s allies and his commitment to come to their defence.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday, he said: ‘The purpose of Nato is to prevent war, is to preserve peace, is to prevent an attack on Nato allies. And we have done so successfully for decades because our deterrence is credible.’ He added: ‘So any suggestion that we are not standing up for each other, that we are not going to protect each other, that does undermine the security of all of us. Increases the risks.’

  1. Trump has no moral right to speak ill of NATO being delinquent in their payments as if he is pure and innocent. He has a history of delinquency when it comes to paying lawyers, contractors and employees.

  2. Sounds like a one sided relationship. We don't need Europe. Let Europe figure out its own problems.

  3. I'm British and completely agree with Trump. Why on earth should American tax payers subsidise European tax payers?

  4. Pay your way then. If the USA under Trump pulled out of NATO. You would be out of a job. You would have to find not 2%, ( that you complain about paying), but 22% black hole in funding if the USA left. Americans should not have to fight and die for Europeans. Period.

  6. Norway due to oil price increases are making a huge profit from the war. Pay in 1.67%gdp. Pathetic, with their history they should know better. Mind you better than Ireland who pay nothing.

  7. They should allow Russia to have Donbass ,Luhansk and Crimea. Then Ukraine to join NATO. Give both countries no choice. We have spent billions and how far have we got .Stalemate.

  8. is probably obvious to the trumpian business logic that a roughly 70-30 split as NATO is 75 and Russia has caught 22 cannot continue.

the challenge to NATO would be to sustain and grow (not diminish) its institution and flip the 70-30 (however it is done) so that it (NATO, over insert projected timescale) would only seek 30% U.S. funding.

the rationale would be something that includes:

    – russian federation
    – prc build-up
    – on planet – off-planet dynamics
    – consolidation over balkanization
    – an entry back in to military defense power for the european powers (post-ww2 neutering)
    – limited expansion (see definitions of defence)
    – ukraine
    – the general shift east
    – proliferation
    – terrorism
    – aob.
