So, I know he's from Glasgow but it's not a "stereotypical govan accent" I'm told (I assume that's the part of Glasgow he's from?). Do you think his Italian grandparent made an impact on his accent being so different?

This guy on youtube has an accent that sounds like a slightly more mellow version of Capaldi's accent.

Are these the same to your ear? Is there a name for this/these accents?

I was also told by an elder that people in Scotland can have accents that sound very different just by living a few streets away. Is that real, or was rust a joke? I'm a foreigner. But where I'm from this is pretty true here too.

  1. He’s an actor so the accent he has now will be very different to the one he grew up with, just like his friend Craig Ferguson

  2. Scots Toning-It-Down-To-Be-Understood-On-The-Telly.

I think he sounds like he’s from Bearsden but that’s just me

  3. Hes not from Govan. He didn’t even really grow up in Glasgow. Close to, but not in.
And yes, there are a variety of accents/modes of speech across Glasgow and its suburbs

  4. It sounds like an affected actor’s accent a bit like John Hannah’s. Softened but still a Scottish tone.

  5. Just sounds toned down, not a thick Glasgow accent. Frankie Boyle is similar, likely toned down for audiences outside Scotland. Theres all sorts of accents in Glasgow though from thick to toned down, usually due to where you were brought up, school you went to etc.

  6. He’s from Bishopbriggs I think which might have something to do with it.

  7. Saw him on TV last week, came from Keppochill Rd Springburn then moved to Bishopbriggs (spam valley) so panloafy accent,

  8. It’s a Scottish accent sculpted for English people to understand

  9. I am Scottish but please explain what pan loafy means.

  10. I’m not even from the central belt and my city has a few different accents. It’s actually bizarre if you think about it.

I wonder if every city is like that and it just depends how attuned you are to the accent that allows you to pick up the differences.
