In light of Roberta Metsola’s election as President of the European Parliament – Where have all Presidents of the Parliament come from?

  1. Just to be clear I made this map to show which countries have had the presidency before since a Maltese president was elected for the first time. I am not truing to push any agenda about discrimination against Easter Europe as some commentors seem to believe.

  2. It’s a bit funny, because Roberta has very very finnish surname. She got it from her husband, who is finnish.

  3. Proud that Poland at least got one elected, and one polish one was put up for the presidential election, Kosma, granted he’s not in my political affiliation but im still proud

  4. Western hegemony hah.

i dont know if its for the better. My conservative shizole would elect some sort of right winger climate crisis denier

  5. At first glance it might seem as if the founding members have all the power, however as they were longer in the union, of course they had more chances to have the president come from their country.

You can also not forget how many people actually come from the founding countries.
237 out of 446 million people come from those 6 founding countries, which is over half of the total population.

Since the eastern expansion of the EU started (2004), there have been 7 presidents of parliament. If you look at the huge population, you would expect 3 or 4 of them to come from founding member countries, which is exactly the case. 4 came from the founders and 1 each from Poland, Ireland and Malta.
