The Russians don’t want any more Nato in their borders, and they will go as far as necessary to prevent that from happening. The US and the EU made their move in 2014 and Russia called their bluff. The result was war and misery for Ukraine. Now seems like most influential countries want to continue down that path and make it even worse. Ukraine will pay the price of course, not the US or the UK.
Germany’s answer to all this has been to try to stop escalation, foment dialogue, cooperation and economic ties between countries so that we all shall have too much to lose by fighting, while the US and the UK’s plan seems to be to arm Ukraine and keep escalating until war. Their motives are obvious: A war in Russias border hurts Russia and the EU (refugees) more than the US or UK, and that’s all they care about.
The German approach is the only way that the countries in the Russian border, and as an extension the EU, might be protected and prosper. The US would throw them all against the Russian bear just to debilitate it, even if it meant their absolute destruction.

Germany would not be able to afford to block Nord Stream 2.
If Russia invades Ukraine the pipeline through Ukraine will be shut off. The only viable route for gas from Russia to Germany would be Nord Stream 2.
If they have no gas from Russia then manufacturing will be uneconmical in Germany and many other EU countries. Energy costs in the EU would likely double or triple again.
I assume in this scenario Russia would likely be cut off from SWIFT, or the banking system Europe uses in general. Wouldn’t that mean payments for gas are stopped anyway?
