Trump’s call for a “bloodbath” was literal — let’s not waste time pretending it was ambiguous

  1. Bit from the commentary:

    > As with the riot he incited on January 6, he views the threat of MAGA violence as a way to intimidate potential opponents into backing down. I think he’s wrong. His threats will make most people more determined to stop him. The one problem, however? Many, if not most, Americans are not hearing about Trump’s unsubtle promise to rain more violence down upon the country.

    > As with Trump’s “Mein Kampf” comments or his routine use of Hitler-esque rhetoric accusing immigrants of “poisoning the blood of our country,” Trump’s violent rhetoric just doesn’t seem to break through. The small flurry of political coverage he gets isn’t loud or sustained enough to penetrate the blanket of ignorance draped over most voters, who just don’t read the news regularly enough to catch these stories. Part of how Trump hides his fascist violence in plain sight is, ironically, by being so relentless with it. He says vile things so regularly that it has been normalized. While most Americans have no idea, it’s “old news” to a press that runs on novelty. For them, “Trump is being violent again” has become dog-bites-man stuff.

    > But a big part of the problem is that, when Trump does this, his comments get bogged down with the bad faith debate about what he “really” meant.

  2. The movie “civil war” is coming out next month too. Interesting timing all around

  3. Just like “fight like hell” meant go to the capital building and peacefully wave MAGA flags. Then when you break into the capital, blame the FBI for tricking you into it. Meanwhile you did exactly what trump told you to do…even though he didn’t *actually* mean it.

  4. Ever notice Trump uses violent and hate words all the time. This is by choice as there are other options. He may speak them in ambiguous places, but it is not ambiguous why he chooses these words.

  5. This is stupid and Trump has enough actual issues that it’s embarrassing to see people wasting their breath on it.

  6. Precise headline. Debating “what he meant” only muddies the waters and allows him to continue being a threat. Call it what it is and fight back.

Trump lacks the capacity for nuance to use a euphemism.

  7. “China now is building a couple of massive plants where they’re going to build the cars in Mexico and think, they think, that they’re going to sell those cars into the United States with no tax at the border. Let me tell you something to China, if you’re listening President Xi, and you and I are friends, but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now, and you think you’re going to get that, you’re going to not hire Americans, and you’re going to sell the cars to us? No. We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars. If I get elected. Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath, for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That’ll be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars.”

I agree it’s not ambiguous at all. It’s extremely clear that he’s talking exclusively about the auto industry.

  8. Trump is problematic in literally hundreds of ways and probably has the most issues out of any presidential candidate in our lifetime, but this one is disingenuous, if you listen to the clip, he clearly was not being literal and really was talking about the auto industry. Why waste time talking about stuff that he hasn’t done or said, when there’s literally hundreds of legitimate issues you can attack him on.

  9. Trump says and does a lot of bad stupid things, if we try to attack him for all of it we will diffuse our message and the worst will be lost in the noise. Reporting on this kind of thing is fine to create a record, but our attacks against trump should be more focused on a core of critique against specific bad actions that are hard to deny.

  10. This will be downvoted ofc. But I don’t agree with this article. In my own opinion, I don’t think “bloodbath” was literal, and I think it was about jobs.

Everyone, trying to make it look like something it’s not, look as dumb as the MAGA people. It’s a tactic taken directly from Trump and the GOP. Have you given up on standing above it all and are now wrestling in the mud with the other side?

Maybe that’s the only way to win. Maybe the truth simply don’t work against Trump. But looking like a hypocrite when trying to convince a voter to switch to Biden might not be a very good tactic.

But again this is just my own opinion, I hope those are at least still allowed here.

Trump says so much crap that is more clear, focus on that instead to win voters. I’m sure if we wait long enough, he will say something like “bloodbath” in the context you looking for.

  11. We must not only vote, but ENCOURAGE OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY to vote as well if we are going to win this.

  12. The fact that we’re even debating whether Trump meant his call for a ‘bloodbath’ literally or not is a testament to how divisive and alarming his language has become.

  13. After Jan 6….a call for a bloodbath from him should have always been considered. It will happen again.

  14. According to TrumpCo every word was just joking, but only after being caught

  15. Of all the things Trump has said I am least offended by this.

The context is clearly in economic terms. Taking things out of context is what Fox News does…I guess we could get on their level.

    Whatever helps win the election…

  16. and so what if it was?….America will stand by giving him and his followers the benefit of the doubt and next he’ll be coincidentally staging another rally on the Ellipse (Donald is many things, creative is not one of them) on Jan 6 2025 to show America what a modern day Hilter speech sounds like in English. Two main differences between Jan 6 2021 and Jan 6 2025 …. 1) the Republican Party will not exist…by the end of this year DJT will have bankrupted the RNC and replaced it with “Trumps New Maga Nationalist Party”. 2) violence will be more severe with more deaths and far more widespread.

  17. He wants a repeat of Jan 6th. He was all smiles and telling the crowd he loved them as they were attacking the Capital building. How can people believe he wasn’t being literal?

  18. Let’s see. Check your registration, get an ID , learn where your poling station is, learn who is running in down ballot races. Pay attention to primaries not just for the president but for all races, local, state and federal. From the school board to the White House every election matters. The more support we give the democrats from all levels of government the more they can get good things done.

Last year democrat victories in Virginia and Pennsylvania and others across the nation have increased the chances of democrats winning this year. This year’s elections are important but so will next year’s elections.

  19. Every single time that man opens his mouth it’s nothing but vitriol and ugly threats. What else would you expect from someone who’s using this presidential run as a means to stay out of prison?? It’s equally sickening to watch his supporters as they continue to lap up his hateful rhetoric. It’s enough to turn anyone’s stomach.

  20. The article is very correct. It wasn’t ambiguous. He clearly meant an economic bloodbath given the context it was said in.

If it wasn’t ambiguous there would have never been a need to take it out of the context it was said in and modify video evidence to cut out what he said prior and after.

  21. It’s too bad we don’t have a justice system that one maniac can’t outsmart. No one will touch him — all the judges are giving him passes all over the place. That stupid decision that there was the “appearance of impropriety” in the (entirely bogus) Fani Willis case, made me despair. Somehow they always give him these legal free passes. I’m sick of it.

I’ve been railing ever since Garland, that traitor, didn’t begin prosecuting him immediately after Jan. 6.

And while I’m complaining, the stupid Democrats never took the electoral college threat seriously. I don’t care how hard it would have been to change it – we are now going to very possibly lose our democracy over it. Losing abortion was a drop in the bucket compared to what is coming.

We can all vote because it’s all we have left but this is terrifying.

  22. This is such a stupid thing to keep giving Trump attention for. I’m far left and think he was talking about the auto industry and economy. I think a decent argument can be made he meant a literal bloodbath. He says stuff like this so the media will keep giving him headlines. There is just so much plausible deniability there that it’s stupid for us to keep chasing these statements when we can go after his policies, actions, and the horrendous statements he has made that are very clear.

  23. Let’s talk about something unambiguous, the 100% tariff. Trump wants to bring back inflation in a big way. Everyone is concerned about the economy. Hit Trump on it.

He wants inflation back. Easy winning message.

  24. It’s pretty outrageous listening to Traitor Trump and his Republicon sychophants trying to walk back his inflammatory BS. Whether he wins or loses he’ll try to unleash blood on the streets. He showed his true colors Jan 6. Leopard don’t change his spots.

  25. This cult is fucking wild. I live in MA. Less than a mile from me is a literal “trump” store. 8 years now. And doing fine, in a very blue state. Imagine an Obama or Biden store? It’s so fuckin’ weird and cringey and I think the mentality is here to stay.

  26. Trump only does literal…he is incapable of doing figurative.

  27. I saw someone make an important distinction. Very often, people use the term blodbath as a description, and it’s obviously an exaggeration. BUT those people are usually referring to something that already happened. For example, there were several headlines that referred to the mass firings at the RNC by Trump as a “Bloodbath.”

Trump is describing what he expects to happen in the future, and he’s calling it a bloodbath, and because he speaks like this often and we already have an example of people dying because they all congregated at the spot that HE told them to, so it becomes harder and harder to dismiss.
