  1. There’s a local and European election in three months. Most of the election literature will be printed before a new leader (Simon Harris) can be chosen. Seems odd timing. And now it will be wrapped into the Consititional referendum narrative. Will this damage Fine Gael in the local and European election and hand the new leader and Taoiseach a weak hand from the beginning?

On Varadkar, it’s crazy how he never won an election for the party. What a nothing of a Taoiseach.

  2. Lee Carsley weighing up an offer from the FAI and this job comes up? No way they get him now!

  3. Fine Gael have been given a lifeline and an opportunity to rebuild after the next election. Varadkar was not a popular leader.

  4. Probably already know the results of the next RedC poll.

Independents at 35% or so.. 😂

  5. So…… what’s going to come out that forced his hand?

  6. Been ousted by his party that want to cling to power I would think and any slim chance of doing that would require him fucking off as universally detested as he is. Now if he could just fuck off out of Irish politics completely to whatever job his globalist mates have lined up for him that would be great.

  7. Great news! Must have landed that cushy EU number hey! Not surprising he doesn’t have the integrity to take a guaranteed loss in the upcoming elections.

  8. **MAJOR POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT**

    Leo – I’m stepping down.

The People – OK, so what’s the major political announcement?

  9. Kind of funny that in classic Leo fashion his resignation was leaked prior to his announcement

  10. Kyle Hayes will be delighted with the timing of this

  11. Please appoint someone who instead of stating obvious things acts on them.

  12. Went to the states last weekend knowing he was resigning today… It’s concentrated Varadkar at his best.

    Edit: Liquid Varadkar!

  13. If they’re smart they’ll elect Paschal Donohoe. He might be the only senior Fine Gael TD who isn’t actively hated. Granted that may change if he ever becomes Taoiseach.

  14. He scrapped re election last time in his local constituency, only getting in on the 5th count. SF only ran one candidate that time and had 4000 extra first preference votes. The last elected got in with 8200 votes and Leo himself only had 8700 votes.

500 vote difference and now a block of 4000 extra votes are coming against him if SF run two candidates. He saw the writing on the wall and didn’t want to go through the embarrasment of it

  15. I see some posters of an FG persuasion saying the timing makes sense.

    Which means the opposite.

  16. Any new leader’s 1st job should be to announce an election.

  17. The Peoples Republic of Cork has taken control of the Irish Government with Martin and Coveney set to lead.

  18. I’m surprised personally, I thought he’d cling on for dear life personally.

I wonder what the likelihood of all this triggering an election before the year end is

  19. Made sure he got his tax payer funded jolly to Washington in first

  20. Waiting on the revisionism and romanticism on his role as Taoiseach in the coming months from the media….

  21. Just shows they can avoid the leaks when they want to

  22. A completely ineffective PR Taoiseach. The country has emerged worse under his leadership and it will take time to recover damage to social cohesion.

I wish him the best in whatever he does, just hope it’s not anyway near the front benches.
