Neat! Its cool to see the evolution over time, how it evolved.
Interesting, thank you. Interesting how fortification in Europe didn’t change a lot since Bronze Age until the Middle Ages, and then such a rapid development began (am I wrong about Romanian castles?). Also, I’m not an expert in the field, but I always thought bastion forts were not combined (at least intentionally) with high old castle-like walls, since star forts were invented as a next step against renewed artillery in the arms race.
A most and bailey.
The guards of 1125 managed to get a roof over their head, it was taken from them in the 1215 austerity budget, despite the lord somehow finding money to build that extra wall. They finally got it back in 1535, when the influence of the masonry-military complex at last waned.
The last one with the bastion/star design was surrounding Copenhagen all the way up until 1865 when that kind of defense was outdated. Theres still a lot of left in the southern and eastern part of the city. The four parks Østre Anlæg, botanisk Have, .C Ørsteds Parken and the famous Tivoli amusement park were all part of the mote/bastion surrounding the city. The four places in the city where the old remains of the mote are lakes and where the old bastions create big height differences.
Dirty Swedes attempted to invade many years ago. They failed.
The British camped outside on land and at the harbour and bombed everything
Its missing the 1800s forts
Any living examples of the 1428 style castles?
I think it’s also an interesting representation of how much wealth overall has increased in this period. The guy from 882 couldn’t build 1215 – not simply because of the engineering challenges, but he wouldn’t have had the money to do so anyway.
What I need is a strategy game where I can design a castle in detail and then see how it would do in a siege. Any suggestions? Is that already a thing?
Makes me want to play Stronghold again.
Anglo-Saxon with a bit of Dutch* castles
1535 – so thats how minimalism started /s
So basically how cities were created
So Irish castles more or less stopped developing around 1125, then.
Britain took until the 1050s to even get the first one.
The problem here is that the first two are more Norman/English castles, the third one is a kinda Central European, the 4th and 5th are very French and the last one is a mix of all the above. Aside of the first two the rest are basically fantasy imagination ment only to represent general trends.

Pretty! If you are into fortifications, I heartily recommend the [recent ACOUP series](https://acoup.blog/2021/10/29/collections-fortification-part-i-the-besiegers-playbook/) on them.
