As the first, 1949 statue of a “Sitting Lenin” in Tartu, Soviet-occupied Estonia was starting to deteriorate, it was replaced with a “Standing Lenin” in 1952. Naturally, the locals came up with a joke that “First he was sitting, now he stood up, soon he will leave for good!” The statue was removed in 1990 and since 2006, it [stands](https://www.ajaloomuuseum.ee/exhibitions/permanent-exhibitions/noukogude-aegsete-monumentide-valinaitus) in the courtyard of the Estonian Museum of History, next to other Soviet political monuments.
Construction on the building behind started during the late Interwar Era and it was meant to be the regional headquarters of the Estonian Defence League, but it was only finished during the 1st Soviet occupation when it became the local “[House of Labour](https://www.kvak.ee/files/2020/12/06-Tartu-T%C3%B6%C3%B6lismaja-1940-a-novembris-A.jpg)”. It was [quite damaged](https://www.kvak.ee/files/2020/12/09-KL-maja-Selleke-1942-A.jpg) in WW2 in 1941 and it was mostly restored during the German occupation. During the 2nd Soviet occupation, it housed the Estonian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The comments on this post go to show how riddled this subreddit’s with Far-left extrmists, which is strange due to this subreddit being a de facto European Union subreddit.
