Dutch cabinet open to defensive military support for Ukraine

  1. The Cabinet is open to defensive military support for Ukraine. This was said by Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs) in the Lower House. Also participation in a European training mission is not excluded, he said.

Earlier the Netherlands was still against military support to Ukraine. But the situation has changed, the minister said. “The context changes almost daily.” On the border with Ukraine, more than a hundred thousand Russian soldiers have gathered.

A majority of the Chamber is also open to defensive military support for Ukraine. More than one hundred thousand Russian soldiers have gathered on that country’s border. The Americans believe that Russia will invade the neighboring country.

As VVD we think we should be open to such a request from Ukraine for defensive military support,” Ruben Brekelmans said in the Lower House. D66’s Sjoerd Sjoerdsma also stated that he could agree with such a request. Agnes Mulder (CDA) keeps the “option open,” but thinks the cabinet should not use it immediately. The PvdA is not ‘by definition’ against supplying defensive weapons, Kati Piri said.

    Additional support
Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs) are going to Ukraine soon. The VVD does not believe they should arrive there empty-handed. The United States and the United Kingdom are already supplying weapons to the government in Kiev.

The Netherlands is already helping Ukraine. Wounded Ukrainian soldiers are helped with rehabilitation here. The cabinet is looking at whether additional bilateral support can be given.

Most parties want tough sanctions against Russia if it invades Ukraine.

  2. At this point it’s more likely for ukraine to get emboldened by these defense supplies that they’ll want to take a pre emptive strike against donetsk and luhansk.

They already started using the turkish drones against the rebels.

Only a matter of time before they’ll want to launch a larger attack. Then Russia will have its justification.

  3. Fuck yeah.
Here’s to all the apologist Germans go8ng on about how NL “also invested” in NS2.

Doesn’t stop us making the right choice when it matters.

  4. Killing almost 300 dutch citizens would probably do that. The Kremlin sure knows how to piss off European countries. Shame they can do no wrong in Germany.

  5. Thank you guys! I’m sure Ukrainian soldiers will make sure some Putin’s warriors in Ukraine will pay with their blood for MH17.

  6. I still dont get how NL let a plane full of dutch civillians get shot down by russians slide.

  7. I’d think so. The russians killed almost 200 Dutch citizens when they illegally shot down mh17. I’m only amazed it’s taken them this long to consider sending aid

  8. NATO was brain dead until last year. Now it looks like the most important organization in Europe. More than the EU itself. Thanks Putin.

  9. I was bashing the Netherlands government for not supporting the Eastern Partnership countries EU and NATO aspirations, but this is a welcome change. I’m sure losing around a hundred civilians to Russian Green Men influenced their decision.

  10. I think Russia has fucked up here. There’s more international support than I think they expected.

Either Putin will pull the trigger quickly, to avoid more weapons flowing into Ukraine and making an invasion harder, or he’ll back off.

If there’s no invasion in the next 2 weeks, I think it’s over.

  11. Finally. I hope Europe will make a stand against Russia. We don’t have to accept Ukraine into eu because of this, but we sure as hell can tell Putin to get fucked. Can’t stand the Russian politics and their need to invade other countries. Fucking focus on your own shit economy instead wasting all that money on invading other countries.

After Hussein the eu can’t act on false flags anymore. Blair and bush fucked us over with their wmd bullshit. Putin can try to pull the same but luckily in this day and age we know better, I hope our leader do as well.

  12. Ukraine thought that it needs to do everything to join Nato to get help and protection against Russia. In the end NATO didn’t care, but so many countries have decided to take matters in their own hands that I feel my beliefs in humanity are a bit restored.
