I mean, I feel like Serbia’s biggest problem is that they have an Orban like autocrat. Politically though, I don’t see Serbia posing as big of a threat in the region as media is trying to make it out to be. Serbia’s economy is pretty integrated with the West at this point, and the urban population has adopted a pretty western lifestyle, and isn’t really eager to participate in a war that could threaten the relatively decent standard of living (I use decent loosely). The USA has made it clear it will step in if Serbia attacks Kosovo or Bosnia, and Vucic wouldn’t risk his hold on power by starting a conflict. Honestly, I think it’s all talk to just rile up the uneducated and often nationalistic rural populace, and the world media just feeds into it by giving credence to these empty empty threats. Serbia is already on the western path, albeit slowly. This is evident by the fact that the economy is completely dependent on the West. Not only this, even unpopular decisions like not sanctioning Russia had fairly positive consequences, like allowing Putin dissenters and LGBTQ Russians to settle in a country that is relatively safer for them. I’m also wondering why Serbia is such a particularly popular “boogeyman”, as a lot of the Eastern European leaders have the type of autocratic and toxic populist tendencies that Vucic does (Orban, Plenkovic, etc).
