Found this dead fish on a Wicklow beach and I've never seen anything like it. Picture Fish, the fish identifier app hasn't a clue. Anyone know what it is?

  1. mind in case it’s one of them Piranha fish they found in Cavan, there…

    vegetarian or otherwise!

  2. I believe Clingfish. Not sure what type. Never seen them with a back like that. I have a book with all fish in north west Europe. I’ll have a look at that

Edit. Never mind it’s a Hook-nose (Agonus cataphractus) with apparently only 34 sightings in Ireland. Last one in 2022. Worth a report.
https://maps.biodiversityireland.ie/Species/13172 I’m not sure to who however.

I used Google lens to find the name of the fish by the way. Worked perfectly

  3. I found a mummified tropical fish (like a big lad – roughly 20cm) on a Wexford beach years ago. Most consensus was that it must have come from an aquarium!

^((I’d agree with the other commenter – looks a lot like an Agonus type based on my google image perusal))

  4. My favourite thing about these posts is looking at the comments all confidently giving about 6 different aswers
