  1. >As one of several ways to strengthen democracy and the “sovereignty of the people”, the President added that, “the French presidency will propose, along with Germany – the coalition agreement [of the new government] was very clear about it – Parliament’s right to propose legislation.”

If implemented, that would be a bombshell.

  2. France and Germany are pushing hard for this, seems to be more than just talk.

Let’s see how the differences will be solved.

  3. We need MUCH STRICTER and actually effective measures of keeping money out of the legislative process beforehand. We don’t need this to turn into the US. Then, we can talk.

  4. A lot of people do not understand the consequences of the “democratic deficit”. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

If the EP gets the right to initiate legislation, it can take the EU in a direction against the will of the Council. It would be a de facto federalisation of the EU. Right now, the EU=the Member States, and the Member States=the EU. Nothing happens without the express approval of the MS. Changing that would be the biggest change in EU history.

Also, in a democracy, the person who represents the most people should be the most powerfull. MEPs represent more citizen than their national counterparts. So instantly, the EP would supercede all national parliaments too.
