I was subbed to r/Climatechange for a few months, and I noticed that there seems to be very little moderation to prevent the spread of misinformation. In fact, I noticed that a good amount of the posts there seem to come from skeptics and denialists. I fear the sub is being used as a way to legitimize climate change skepticism. Has anyone else had a similar experienced on the sub?

  1. A quick review seems to confirm what you noticed. “Rational” is right-wing doublespeak for confidently making up alternative facts to support their worldview while dismissing the other side’s concerns, based in actual facts, as irrational. Reddit censors speech it finds socially problematic while giving free reign to disinformation that is actually going to have catastrophic consequences, not just hurt feelings.

  2. At least one of the moderators of r/climatechange is also a moderator of r/ climateskeptics. And maybe that says something about the editorial management of disinformation on that sub. On r/climateskeptics, anything goes as long as you’re not “disparaging the sub,” and it seems to me the moderators play fast and loose with that rule to strike down any criticism of disinformation. That is – pretending to protect the feelings of the skeptics while really just letting disinformation go unchallenged. That moderator might be bringing similar mandate to r/climatechange.
