France Should Revisit Plan to Shut Nuclear Units, Says Regulator

  1. And it’s not even summer, when they normally lack water for cooling.
Let’s hope France will switch to a more sustainable energy source soon

  2. I can’t even describe how angry this makes me

To my knowledge France gets most of its energy from nuclear.

Nuclear doesn’t emit carbon (it does require carbon emissions while building, but so do solar panels, wind farms, and basically every energy source).

Germany did this and now they have to rely on natural gas from Russia because solar and wind is not consistent enough to run nationwide power grids,

Now with this whole Ukraine situation we understand how dangerous relying on Russia is.

If we wanna actually stop climate change, we cannot run a country with only solar and wind, there needs to be some more consistent power source that can fill in the gaps when there are unexpected drops in energy due to the climate.

You can either do that by burning hydrocarbons, or through nuclear.

  3. Then you might know that hydrogen is an energy storage solution, not an energy source. The question of electricity generation remains even when using hydrogen.
For the record, the electricity-to-hydrogen-to-electricity loop is about 30% efficient.
(Source : RTE’s latest report https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbrcUz0pu80 – this video is in French sorry guys )

From the 6 possible scenarios described by France’s electricity transport network, the one that looks most appealing is the one with 1/3 nuclear and 2/3 renewables with crazy investments in hydrogen infrastructure to deal with storage and flexibility.
