We fact checked Dick Smith on whether a country can run entirely on renewables. Here’s what we found

An Australian entrepreneur recently said we should build nuclear power plants, we've never had any, saying "Look, I can tell you, this claim by the CSIRO that you can run a whole country on solar and wind is simply a lie." CSIRO is our government scientific research organisation.

The tldr is Smith is wrong, dead wrong if you include hydro. He's kind of technically right if you turn your head sideways, squint a bit, and imagine that solar PV and wind stopped getting better and cheaper a few years ago.
