  1. That article sums up my thoughts well.
I don’t see how we can grow the economy and attempt to tackle climate change in a real way

  2. And the world falls apart if we stop focusing on economic growth so idk

  3. biggest problem is people want to tackle the problem problem of climate change without changing their specific circumstance

ie we in the developed world want to keep all the benefits we have and we can’t exactly say to the developing world well sucks for you forever poor people

  4. There is no world in which humanity cuts greenhouse gas emissions enough to prevent catastrophic consequences. We will do what we’re best at doing: adapt. We adapt through the development and utilization of technology, and the economy is a prime driver for that process.

Solar cells aren’t a thing without economic interests, for example.

Even if we were capable of modifying our psychology to seeking a balance with nature, there’s just too much to change all at once. Fossil fuels for transportation, production, agriculture. To be clear I’m not saying we stop transitioning to green energy or that it’s pointless to try, but we need to get used to the Idea it’s going to take serious geo-engineering if we want to live anywhere that’s either above sea level or below untenable temperatures.

  5. Unless there’s a way to incentivise people for environment vs personal economics. It’ll never happen.

You could use ubi but Republicans won’t let it happen.

  6. Our economy revolves around the consumption of cheaply made goods that will be thrown out in short time. We need laws in this country that create quality standards and make these goods easily repairable as well.

  7. You can have economic growth why focusing on climate. Circular economy and renewable energy creates jobs.

  8. The climate is not doomed, because we cannot live without the stable climate that enabled civilization. So that leaves us without the loosely regulated capitalism that created this mess. There is really no choice.

  9. Are you trying to tell me that the expectation of limitless profits coupled with hamstrung environmental protections are going to hurt us?!?!

  10. Shut up , your iPhone you typed this on is made by oil based fuels and slave labor .

  11. The big wedge in the debate between economists and non-economists about “growth” is always about the meaning of GDP and GDP growth.

Once a non-economist comes up with their own way of thinking about what growth means, they can’t shake it, for some reason. And economists have a very specific definition of GDP and growth that we can’t shake, either.

  12. So much alarmism. Every year we hear there are going to be a bunch of big, bad hurricanes that will destroy us. Some years are worse, sometimes it doesn’t materialize. Even when a bad hurricane hits, it’s just some news story affecting a few communities that thought it was a good idea to live below sea level. I live in a much nicer area and this doesn’t concern me.

  13. I think if you’re about to preach lifestyle austerity at a time where people are receiving so much less for the work they are doing than even a decade ago, you need to rethink your strategy and read the room…..
