Israeli military conduct drills in Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and northern Israel

Golan Heights were part of Syria until 1967, when Israel captured most of the area in the Six Day War, occupying it and annexing it in 1981.

That unilateral annexation was not recognized internationally, and Syria demands the return of the territory. Golan overlooks Lebanon and borders Jordan.

The drills took place as the U.S. on Tuesday again vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on the Israel-Hamas war, blocking a demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. It instead pushes the 15-member body to call for a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas.
