German defense minister explores Scandinavia models of conscription | DW News

Sweden has formerly joined NATO as the 32nd member of the transatlantic military Alliance ending Decades of post-war neutrality at a ceremony in Washington Swedish prime minister wolf christon called it a victory for Freedom Stockholm joined the alliance amid concerns about Russian aggression following the fullscale invasion of

Ukraine two years ago like to thank both President Biden Sweden’s accession to Nato comes as Germany’s defense minister travels through Scandinavia Boris historias is looking for a potential blueprint for reintroducing conscription in Germany but the task will require significant political backing German defense minister Boris Pistorius is on a 4-day tour of

Scandinavia an important part of his trip is to look at the models these countries are using for conscription because of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine there are new geopolitical realities and threats and there’s a growing realization that the German bundes not only leg resources but

People too Pro in we are investigating a step that you have already taken we suspended conscription in 2011 now we are looking into reactivating it and we are looking at the Swedish model each year Sweden contacts all 18y olds and then selects around 30,000 men and women for the recruitment process of

These around 8,000 are then actually called up for the one-year training course moving on to Norway Pistorius saw military conscripts in action up close they helped protect the almost 200 km long border with Russia the recruits are very aware that they need to be able to defend themselves and their country

Should they have to it hits us first yeah we have to be at our best at all time you feel like you actually do a job we’re not just training uh we actually do something real in Germany there are some hurdles when it comes to recruitment the biggest one

Would be changing the Constitution to allow men and women to be conscripted and that can only be done with a 2/3 majority in Parliament nonetheless the German defense ministers adamant his country can learn from Scandinavia conscripts um no with no officers over there just work doing

Their job and loving it and doing it very very efficiently and with a lot with a lot of passion I was really impressed talk by talking to them I’m also impressed by the high proportion of service women in the Norwegian Army which is about 40% it’s a long way to go

For the German Army in exchange of best practice is a strong element of NATO’s military alliance with Sweden and Finland having joined recently Scandinavian approaches will feature even more prominently in discussions on conscription going forward

  1. With the already terrible education system in Germany, a return to conscription will create a social divide where 20% will lead and all the rest will be cannon fodder for the madmen.

  2. Lol sure, well I've searched for how much time Baerbock served in the military and found 0 days, why should anyone accept orders from her?

  3. NATO is now an aggressively hostile military alliance and a genuine threat to world peace 🕊️ ..it needs to go away!

  4. Are we seriously considering direct confrontation against Russia? Please start talking rather than taking us all down to the abys.

  5. Seems the days of a peaceful, liberal Europe is coming to an end and for what? Europe has been the most brutal violent place through out history. It seems post WW2 they were only on a pause.

  6. Before joining NATO, we tain to defend our country.
After joining NATO , ya most probably be sent off out first .. tp fight for another country.

as we (other NATO members) hasnt train our citizens as well you do..

  7. The love for Ukrainian is above all German young men. When will Germany deport all the young Ukrainian who escaped conscripts??

  8. I was in the US Military in West Germany. West German guys hated the thought of joining the military! They were more than happy to let the Americans, French and English to defend them.

  9. Germany first needs to build the concept of a nation and patriotism, it has been a country of contradictions and paradoxes since the 1960's. The Prussian soul was eliminated and the political system prevents any real changes (designed that way in the post-war years). Take Japan as an example, they have realigned with the reality of modern times and developed a robust military. The Japanese know who they are and what they believe as a nation.

  10. Similar should be considered in The Netherlands too… will bring back discipline which is seriously lacking in Dutch society!

  11. IMHO Either way with the equlity thing going on, it
has to be either both ( all 999t) genders being
conscripted or none. Also there should be NO double
    standards.

  12. Continuous NATO expansion towards Russian border after the collapse of the Soviet Union is the root cause of the problem. Imagine Putin or Xi Jinping trying to form a military alliance similar to NATO with Mexico or Cuba. I bet US will send troops in a flash and neutralize that threat. No world peace as long as there is a massive private military industry. They always need a theater of war to sell their goods and their politician buddies always give them one. NATO kept Russia as an adversary after the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russians were never allowed into the European family as Germany was allowed back in after the WW2. Putin would not have been in power this long if NATO was disbanded at the same time Warsaw Military alliance was dismantled. Putin is using the NATO threat to rally the Russians just as US/EU Military industry is using Russian bogeyman to sell their expensive combat toys.

  13. Why not just conscript women? They're stronger than men according the average Western Government so lets just employ an army of just women.

  14. Spies on My Phone are Colonists. Russia on Israel's Border and US GB Army is on China's Boarder. Colonists will Be All Conscripted.
