Gordon Brown: Britain seems stuck in a doom loop of poverty. I have a plan to raise billions to address that. With will and ingenuity, communities, charities, companies and government could work together to rescue millions of people.

  1. > The [top 1% donate overall just 0.2%](https://civilsocietycommission.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/FINAL-Unleashing-the-power-of-civil-society-%E2%80%93-for-upload.pdf) of their income – that’s just [£538 a year from average incomes of £271,000](https://www.probonoeconomics.com/news/charity-donations-from-uks-richest-down-20-despite-higher-earnings). But if that top 1% were incentivised to donate just 1%, £1.4 billion a year could be raised for good causes.

Very short version is “Give corps and the very rich tax incentives to donate more money to charity”.

The Billionaires will not save us.

  2. You’ve had your chance, big man. An end to what was it? Show me results from actions, not planning chatter. The same goes for the lot of you politicians, we the electorate are waiting.

  3. Does his plan include selling gold at the bottom of the market?

  4. Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who decided to sell approximately half of the UK’s gold reserves in a series of auctions. At the time, the UK’s gold reserves were worth about US$6.5 billion, accounting for about half of the UK’s US$13 billion foreign currency net reserves.[7] There are various later estimates of the cost of that the decision to British taxpayers, for example £2 billion (The Sunday Times, 2007) and £7 billion (The Daily Telegraph, 2010).[1][8]. PEOPLE OBVIOUSLY DONT LIKE THE TRUTH.

  5. Ahh they’ve defrosted the Gorgon yet again.

After he saved the world, ended hunger, rechristened Omaha beach for the D-Day landings Obama beach and sold off the Gold reserves at the lowest possible price it’s great to know that the person least suited to ever being Prime Minister still has radical plans that we all should buy into…

  6. For those who don’t want to read the article he wants everyone to check their old jacket pockets. Personally I found a fiver.

  7. His plan is selling the gold on the cheap again, isn’t it.

  8. Ah I forgot about the days I wasn’t in poverty when he was PM, moron.

  9. How about fuck off Gordon you imperialist shit

  10. Gordon Brown, famous for loosing billions by selling off our gold reserves at the lowest price caused the doom loop.

  11. What’s he going to do, make another think tank like These Islands?

  12. Don’t really doubt the man’s sincerity, but it has the tang of retrospective guilt from a former Chancellor who doubled the tax rate of the poorest paid workers earning under £16k.

Would a done, could a done, should a done from a man who helped end the traditional Labour movement of working people to embrace deregulation of the banking sector, to which even the Thatcherites warned he was going too far, that helped lead to the ’08 banking crash through sheer greed that started a public punishment scapegoat austerity that not only causes national near bankruptcy, wage freeze, homelessness etc. today, but will do so for generations to come.

Like Thatcherism, he was lured by the get rich quick city slick for political representation over the public need for financial probity and fairness he was supposed to be champion of as the public representation.

Todays Labour Party now embraces that city slik representation through a financial backing and donorship that was carrying the tory party for the last 2 decades. Now promises of exuberant wealth taxation to ease the burden on people has been binned and replaced with unashamed promises of austerity and pain for years and years to come for a working public long abandoned by labour.

  13. “With will and ingenuity”.

Ah, the triumph of the will…

  14. Always enjoyable to see how much G Brown still puts arr Scotland’s collective nose out of joint.

  15. With 22% of the population in poverty and the Economy fucked – how?

  16. Says the man who used fiscal drag and introduced more stealth taxes than any other during his tenureship as Chancellor. I’ll take no lessons from a charlatan like him.

    Robbed us all blind

  17. “Britain is stuck in a doom loop of poverty. My name is Gordon Brown and here’s why Scotland shouldn’t be an independent country…”

What a useless wank this dinosaur is. The “doom loop” of poverty is a direct result of him and his fellow unionist successors.

As someone below pointed out, labour is against fairer taxation. So why aren’t they exploring other options? Such as higher taxes for companies that don’t pay a real living wage? I would just *love* to see companies tie themselves in knots trying to explain why they can’t pay their workers fairly.

What is the point of labour if they’re just going to be Cameron 2.0.

  18. Incentivise the rich? How about we fucking eat them and just take all their shit, every last penny?

Note, that’s a stupid idea but fucking Davros started it…

  19. > I have a plan to raise billions to address that

    Soundo. What is that plan?

  20. Don’t remember “Doom Loop of Poverty” being in the 2014 small print.

  21. “All the shit I’ve advocated for my entire political life has fucked society, and made everyone poor as fuck”

“Oh I know, lets give rich people more so they give their waste surplus to people that need it instead of throwing it in the bin”

Brown is and absolute rot-hole. The man who dissolved the gold standard and privatised the NHS with his mate, Tony, the war criminal. I wish he’d just throw the towel in and fuck right aff! Prick!

  22. I wouldn’t trust him to count the money in my piggy bank.
