interesting, that our austrian “feldsperling” (field sparrow) is a “tree sparrow” in english
what i miss on the t-shirt (as they visit our bird feeder regularly) is nuthatch and redstart. when i sit at my morning coffee i have direct view to the birdfeeder right outside the window. the tree sparrows act like a juvenile gang – they never come alone, and when they arrive, the coal tits (and the occasional willow tit) and especially the redstart have to give way. but they all depend on the nuthatch, which pecks into the feeder’s hole with his long beak until more food trickles out
blackbirds go crazy whenever i deploy compost (lots of worms in it), and for the spotted woodpeckers i take binoculars to watch them extending their nest holes in the old orchard trees across the street
what a good thing that, being retired, have time to birdwatch
