Ah. AIPAC’s personal think tank says Palestine is bad. Wow. Great find here.
Yep. This was such a shocker. I am pretty sure that this is the rare Reddit news article that I don’t have to read. The headline pretty well sums it up.
Hamas is lying, not new.
But people still fall for it.
>To assess this problem, the author has assembled a comprehensive collection of publicly available Gaza fatality data that includes:
> Daily updates covering the period October 7 through March 21, obtained from four sources: the Hamas-run MOH in Gaza, the Hamas-run GMO, the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health in Ramallah, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) (which simply relays Gaza MOH/GMO claims, sometimes inaccurately).
> Compiled data from thirteen Health Sector Emergency Reports published by the Gaza MOH between December 11 and March 18 (these documents can be accessed via the MOH Telegram channel or the Internet Archive).
> Two comprehensive MOH data releases on October 26 and January 7 (the latter covering up to November 2 for all of Gaza and up to January 5 for the south).
Fascinating, I did not realize that Hamas was actually pretending to release numbers in such detail.
>In the first month of the war, the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health (MOH) in Gaza relied on its existing collection system, made up primarily of hospitals and morgues, to certify each death. Starting in early November, however, hospitals in northern Gaza began to shut down or evacuate during the Israeli ground invasion, spurring the MOH to introduce a new, undefined methodology for counting fatalities: media reports. This methodology, which the MOH has rarely acknowledged publicly, accounts for the majority of fatalities reported over the past four months, surpassing the traditional collection system.
.
>Despite known problems with the MOH central collection system (outlined in more detail in the author’s January study), it is the more reliable methodology because it involves identity verification and counting of actual bodies. Media reports, by contrast, are much more difficult to verify, regularly lack details necessary to determine the identities or disposition of those killed, and may double-count or miss many fatalities. The divergence between the two methodologies is perhaps best shown by how differently they have reported demographic details about Gaza deaths.
.
>This comparison reveals sharp differences—most notably, a sixfold decrease in adult male fatalities recorded from media reports and a fourfold increase in child fatalities. (For reference, children make up roughly 50% of Gaza’s population, and men and women make up a quarter each.)
“Become”
Holocaust denying Arabs are constantly like “The number of dead keep changing lmao” (even though they don’t) and then completely ignore this
it goes from 10,000 children to 15,000 children back down to 10,000. Make up yalls minds lmao
One thing they fail to mention is the expected deaths in Gaza from just normal life. The mortality rate was 2.91 deaths per 1000 in 2022. So with 2,048,000 people, you would expect ~5,960 people to die in a year. That would be 2,980 in the six months since October 7. So normal deaths would account for almost 10% of the total casualties.
“Become”
No news from either side has been remotely trustworthy since day 1. If someone who isn’t involved doesn’t report it first-hand, it’s just propaganda. Even if one of them says something true, it’s not worth believing without independent confirmation.
It started completely unreliable.
There is no way to get an accurate count of deaths in Gaza. Their hospitals are barely functioning and most of the city is huge slabs of concrete rubble.
There’s no way to count deaths in the middle of an ongoing armed conflict there.
Great, now do the “famine.”
News Flash. Information from death zones unreliable. Read all about it!
Title should be “Gaza Fatality Data Has Been Completely Unreliable from Day 1”
You’re telling me the people who colluded in the Oct massacre, who was able to count the number of dead blind kids 12 seconds after each IDF strike with 150% accuracy, and is constantly caught lying, is giving the world unreliable data? WOAH. Who wouldve thought.
But hey, “kids dying” makes better headline than “Kill another terrorist” right.
Next they will be telling them they’re not dying its all in the heads.
Become?
Opposing Israel is not supporting Hamas, it is not antisemitism.
“Has become” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this title
Who would say data by a terrorist organization is not accurate, huh?
Hamas has an easier time counting civilian deaths because they keep a careful eye on their human shields lest they run away.
Media still has no shame parroting everything Hamas says as fact.
Newsflash: fog of war in genocidal gaza conflict is dense
Where are all the Hamas fighters? Oh hiding behind civilians
Does this include members of hamas as fatalities? Does this include under-18 members of hamas as children? Civilians forced to be human shields and killed? Civilians killed by hamas?
Yes, the raw numbers are tragic, but I want a comprehensive breakdown of who’s dying, and how.
Big surprise, the Hamas controlled Ministry of Health lying about the numbers of those killed and their composition. And yet, every media organization reported on their bullshit of the mass killing of women and children, which obviously is not the case
When reputable news and UN quote the numbers that Hamas give no one will ever believe different, terrible.
As if it was ever reliable taking casualty numbers from a bloody Jihadi terrorist organisation!
>has become
In the same way that the sun has become hot.
Hamas, the duly elected government in Gaza, is in the “Find Out” phase of FAFO? Why is that surprising to anyone?
In the last huge kerfuffle, The Germans and Italians couldn’t keep up either, in the end, as they got their asses handed to them. The difference this time is that the war is displayed in real-time so people expect that data will also be collected in real-time. The reality is so much messier.
I tried to give this a very impartial read. It’s an interesting analysis, and I think the author raises some valid concerns about the reported death count’s reliability. However, I thought this part was particularly telling:
> Data from the central collection system indicates that 58% of those killed since the start of the war are women and children; this figure drops to 48% for those killed since November 3.
If we suppose that the author is correct—and thus accept that 48% of Gazans killed since Nov 3 have been women and children—that remains an obscene casualty rate. Further, I suspect it will only worsen as more bodies are dug out from under the rubble.
Here’s a fun fact: Nobody knows how many people lived in Gaza pre war. All the numbers you see are just pure speculation. There haven’t been a census in a long time, this is also true for the West Bank.
