Give anyone caught with a machete in public 20 years, see if they start feeling differently. Give anyone who threatens or robs someone with one life without parole. What exactly is the point of risking these scumbags being out? Let’s be real, they aren’t going to be contributing to society whether we risk them killing your wife or kids, or not.
It’s one thing if someone is committing a crime that, while serious, isn’t heinous/violent, there’s half a chance with them, but people like this simply aren’t worth the risk to the public. There’s a big difference between stealing a car, selling drugs, scamming someone, whatever, and going round with a machete looking for someone to dice.
If we don’t already have it, time for a subcategory of prohibited bladed articles i.e. stuff that is _never_ legal. Get caught with any of that and you go away for five years. The judge will have very limited discretion.
To balance that out, nudge gun possession up to ten years.
Until the UK takes these crimes seriously they will keep happening.
