>The Scottish Conservative leader joins First Minister Humza Yousaf and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar in saying they have concerns about the plans being brought forward by Lib Dem MSP Liam McArthur.
If they have concerns, why not start a discussion and try to alleviate those through amendments and such rather than opposing straight away.
For the party of liberty and personal independence they rarely apply their principles in an honourable manner.
The three of them, like all politicians, are despicable in their quasi virtual signalling on this matter. Its the final “fuck you” of a system that is designed to control you and squeak every last pip out of you. Dodgy anas and the amoeba wee Dougie have no problem with thousands of kids being slaughtered over the past months though.
I watched my grandmother and father die of dementia. The last week were horrible and I wished they had went sooner with more dignity and less suffering. Politicians are the ones that put me off supporting assisted dying. I don’t trust those fuckers
There are places around the world (Canada, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Austria) where we can look to craft our own version, trying to avoid any pitfalls the other systems may have.
To have it quickly shut down by party leaders like this is disappointing, but I hope the vote goes ahead regardless. I know I’d like the possibly, if something like dementia came my way.
Lets hope it passes, or at least gets the debate it deserves. I wouldn’t want anyone to suffer horrifically for potentially weeks to years for no real reason. It’s sad that animals can get a more dignified death than many people.
Something as big as this shouldn’t just be left to politicians, let the country vote. I’ve heard time and again people say they’d rather have the choice to end their life early rather than suffer, I’ve never heard anyone say they’d rather die in agony or morphined out their head.
My late mother suffered a stroke 5 years before she died. We came under a lot of pressure to agree for her to stop receiving sustenance.
We held out and when she came round the damage was much less severe than anticipated. She was disabled and required a wheelchair, but was able to enjoy a comfortable and reasonably normal life until she was killed by a second stroke 5 years later.
On the other hand my grandmother lingered in agony for months- riddled with cancer and incoherent with either pain meds or pain itself.
Difficult business.
I think if there was less taboo we would probably have ended both lives early. Much to my mother’s disadvantage. Tricky suff.
I’m for assisted dying in principle but concerned about the mission creep that will inevitably occur. You can hold up Canada either as a shining example of forward thinking or how it can develop.
They have just postponed introducing assisted dying for mental illnesses but rest assured it is coming.
As it is 4% of all deaths are assisted dying which is a concerning statistic.
You only have to look at how the criteria for abortion is applied to see where it can go.
“I’m sorry, but because it personally makes me feel icky, you have to watch your loved ones deteriorate in the most heart wrenching way imaginable. Thoughts and prayers”

This should be a discussion, with their key concerns addressed. It feels like It’s already destined to fail. Public opinion is massively on the side of assisted dying. As a consequence, the SNP cannot then shout about public opinion for independence.
My cat died with more dignity than my grandfather (oesophageal cancer) and I support assisted dying for people who make the decision for themselves
and are of sound mind and judgement.
Nobody with a shred of humanity should be opposing this – they would be working to make sure that our laws and protections are some of the most robust in the world.
We need better politicians. Ones that are unafraid of their shadows.
How does Douglas Ross still have a job?
Point of order, Ross isn’t a party leader. Sunak leads the Tories, not Ross.
Ross is still a cunt though.
Scotland still in thrall to flat earthers shocker…
I see this as, in essence, the same argument as pro choice vs pro life. Your body, your choice. As long as the person is of sound mind the decision should be theirs to make
Is Ross into religion?
Bunch of idiots
If this passes, what’s the odds of it being stopped like the GRA?
I can imagine this blowing up in Holyrood’s face “Scotland wants to kill your granny for the inheritance tax windfall” or some other shite
This may upset some but I do believe that as a society we sometimes refuse to let go when it’d arguably be best for the person involved. I know if I got diagnosed with anything like cancer or the like I’d want to sit down with family and decide, do they really want my (or anyone’s) death to be chaotic and traumatic in an emergency room, surrounded by medical equipment as doctors try everything to extend someone’s life by a handful of days?
I guess what I’m trying to say is everyone should have that choice and it seems mad that we still refuse to give the dying the same dignity we’d give to an elderly pet.
I struggle to understand
* if an animal is suffering we prosecute for not ending suffering
* if a human is suffering we prosecute for ending suffering
(I’ve just lost my mother through aspirated pnemonia, and it took days for the infection to slowly choke the life out of her as she got weaker and weaker. If she could have been eased she would have taken it)
Awful. The suffering I have seen. The religiously minded are mental.
Having watched family and friends literally being mummified alive in pain with little dignity,I WANT the choice as to when I end my suffering when the time comes . The argument that animals are treated better than humans is real. Why do we put animals out of their suffering but humans have to endure the drawn out process of dying many in pain and having mucus sucked out of their throats as it’s choking them too.
The tory party have massive sponsors from pharmacutical companies who will not get so much profits if assisted dying is allowed, same reason that abortions are outlawed in many US states – it affects company profits.
