The folk song we’ve translated here – “Ой на горі та женці жнуть”, or “Oh, On the Hillside the Farmers Reap” – was written all the way back in the 17th century, perhaps as early as 1621 based on the heroes mentioned by name in the song… though most historians that have studied its origins seem to agree that it was probably the latter half of that century. The oldest written source of the song is from west Ukraine in 1713!

The instrument you hear is the Bandura, the very Ukrainian sort of instrument that we wrote about in detail in [**this post**](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/uxwu7k/457_eest_the_sun_is_rising_on_the_92nd_day_of_the/)**.**
