Their natural habitat involves swinging between the trees, like monkeys.
Obviously, for a farmer, this is a problem.
I find it a bit sad that the practice of docking tails is so commonplace that we aren’t used to seeing sheep in their natural state anymore.
They’ve evolved to grow them to try and avoid anyone with nefarious intentions.
They’re just doing wool poos.
Is there some real scientific reason for why their tails get docked or is it just a thing people do?
I hate seeing a sheep with one wellington boot on it’s back leg being chased by a farmer also only with one wellie.
I genuinely had NO idea that sheep naturally have tails like this. I’m 29 how am I just learning this?!
I said this to my husband the other day, first time I’d seen a sheep with a tail and said how weird it was 😂
I only realised that sheep have tails when I was already a teenager, which is embarrassing as my grandparents had sheep.
When we visited around Easter, the lamb tails had already been docked, so I never realised it until much later when they decided to leave them be.
The main reason for docking the tails is that they easily catch their tails in fences etc and they get incredibly dirty from feces and attract flies etc
Now before you get all upset: there is no scary, big knife involved. the tails are bound with a metal ring which slowly cuts off the blood supply and the tails simply fall off.
They wag them when they’re happy too. 🥲
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe you’ll find that’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing
