‘A “secondary palette” has been composed to match messaging relating to Labour’s “missions”. They are “growth pink”, “green energy green”, “NHS blue”, “policing yellow” and “opportunity purple”.’
Policing yellow? Does this mean that we’re going to have to wear even more of the abominable high vis yellow stuff? I already glow in the bloody dark!
I feel unsettled they call themselves Labour. It gives rise to negative emotions.
If people in the country are wary of the national flag, it is they who are the issue.
This is how you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory
This sounds like a Torygraph article designed to smear Labour, but it’s a Guardian article.
I don’t think many people care too much, most campaign material gets thrown into the recycling bin anyway.
Honestly, these people have no business being in a party that aspires to be the Government of the country if they object to using the country’s flag. It’s juvenile student politics.
Is it slightly flag-shagging? Yeah. I don’t want a country obsessed with it’s flag like the US. However I am also not ashamed of the flag either and it’s perfectly normal for political parties to use it. Grow up.
To be fair, they’re suggesting a more balanced and targeted approach of material based on audience, which is a reasonable consideration to make in politics. In effect, they are advertising and the colours of a flyer will make an impact. Psychology is very important in these fields, as the Cambridge Analytica scandal demonstrated. The targeting of political campaigns using the Big 5 Personality Factors in America was immensely effective from what I recall.
Regardless of the underlying reasons for various colour schemes being more or less effective in certain areas, it would be foolish not to seize every advantage you can in a political race. Within reason of course, the aforementioned use of personality factors crossed an ethical boundary in my opinion.
Will everyone please just stop losing their shit over flags?
Everytime labour gets ahead in the polls they always start this sort of bullshit. Seen it for the last 40 years
It begins! The Labour Party self destruction, just prior to an election.
Another example of why labour infighting is so off putting. I feel like the only reason they will win is because the Tories have absolutely fucked themselves.
It’s this pathetic shit like being embarrassed to use the national flag while you campaign to be the rulers of the nation.
Like really this is what they are fighting about?!
How about we do a photo shoot of Dianne and Jeremy draped in flags? Would that help?
I can see their point because although one shouldn’t be averse to the national flag it doesn’t need to be the central theme either.
It’s at times like this that I’m reminded of a quote from George Orwell:
>“In intention, at any rate, the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box. All through the critical years many left-wingers were chipping away at English morale, trying to spread an outlook that was sometimes squashily pacifist, sometimes violently pro-Russian, but always anti-British.”
The fact that the left reject patriotism merely gives that ground to the Tories and Reform Party. Labour cannot afford to be known as the party that hates Britain. The England flag is considered racist now **because** the left refuses to use it, essentially giving that symbol exclusively to the right!
We need to reclaim the flag from the racists. Not surrender it to them.
Anyway must be a slow news day or something.
Didn’t even include the said flyer to see what it looks like.
What a tug of war in this country: “shag the flag!” “Don’t shag the flag!” over and over.
Beats facing a real problem I guess.
‘Keir Starmer is facing discontent from Labour MPs over the dominant use of the union flag in election campaign material amid concern it may alienate ethnic minority voters and others’ why, they know what Great Kingdom they came to, why would that put them off? Sounds more like it’s the non white labour staff who don’t like the flag
What’s the chorus of the Labour Anthem…”We’ll keep the red flag flying here”. “Do as I say, not as I do.”, should be the Labour motto.
Once again, the left manage to fall out amongst themselves despite being poised to win the next general election.
I’m in agreement with a lot of folk here, not wanting to be obsessing over the flag but for fuck sake, it’s pretty standard for political parties to do this.
Back in my student youth, when i was far Left (now centre-left). I saw this all the time and couldn’t understand why they would bicker and refuse to work with other over trivial shit. The right, despite being completely dysfunctional, seems to be more on the same page. Pains me to say it.
Labour needs to take back the flag from the right wing nut jobs after the damage of brexit!
Starmer and Rayner will drag Labour to leadership, whether the flinching and sneering underbelly likes it or not
Look at videos of 97. British flags everywhere. There’s a difference between nationalism and patriotism.
If MPs are uncomfortable with the flag of our country then maybe they shouldn’t be MPs
Baffles me that the tories are so incompetent that they cant beat a group many of whom seem to legit hate the UK.
Classic left. Probably happy to fly a Palestine flag on the flyers though.
You can absolutely bet that Starmer will face an internal revolt over him as PM within 12 months. In fact that would be a great political bet to make.
These people hate you, and you’re going to elect them anyway
FFS let’s just fight over whether we should use the country’s flag so we can let the Tories win again getting sick of the left more and more.
How does something like this even make its way to the press? I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some Labour MPs who opposed this given, politically speaking, displaying the union flag on flyers is associated with the far right this is a chance to claim it back & disassociate it with them. But I don’t know how this gets to the press unless some idiots made a tweet or are trying to sabotage Starmer.
I’m not British and it beggars belief that there are politicians and people in the country who think it’s shameful or offensive to fly a British flag.
Like wtf.
Labour at it again, desperately trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Honestly these people would rather put a Palestine flag on it then would be confused why they’d get obliterated in the next GE even against a defunct Tory party.
