What is this mark?

I went to visit Malta for the third time a few weeks ago. As always I had a great time! I went in a hike from the golden bay and towards Cut rock observation post, and found this marking in the rocks. I tried looking online but couldn't find any information on what it's purpose is or was. Could any of you lot help me?
