When foreigners think about German music, many think about songs like this:

Is music like this actually popular in Germany, or do only Bavarian grandmothers listen to it?

Mostly people over 70, likes this kind of music.
But a few also under 70 likes it, but it is not mainstream anymore.
Mainstream music in Germany has mostly more beats per minute. Or have lyrics which you can sing, also very drunk, so the refrain must be very easy.
I think people that like this are close to extinct…
Retirees and the occasional young, conservative person from small villages (grew up there). That makes for a surprisingly large market, since Germany has lots of old people, which is why stuff like this is still on state TV at prime time every few weeks.
My grandparents did. I still remember my grandpa listening to [this](https://youtu.be/xdbPdGqjZGM) a lot. Most of the more famous folk songs are from Bavaria though. There are other styles of folk music of course but the southern was/is the most famous. Nowadays it’s, as another user already said, mostly older people that still listen to it but more 80+ than 70+.
That’s a bit too commercialized for me. I prefer stuff like this https://youtu.be/2c7xqHx6LEg
Within 30 seconds of clicking that link, my husband said „please make it stop“.
This music kind of gets out of fashion which i find pity somehow. Like before there was the Musikantenstadl and on radio Bayern 1 they always played such songs (now only Bayern Heimat).
Anyhow i do play Akkordeon myself and enchant my neighbors every now and than with a good round.
This is a pretty popular folk song https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
Me does. Zillertaler Schürzenjägern.

Most folk music will probably be found in smaller villages around Germany. In many it is still pretty common to have a band at village fests although the music played may differ from area to area.
only bavarian grandmothers, yes
