So we’re all in agreement the Royal Airforce is quite good as Jeremy Clarkson said
We really should attack and conquer Germany before they get more fighter planes.
What the fuck are they even doing that our militaries got so bad since the end of the Cold War. Like literally every country got major problems and nobody cares to fix them. How do you go from 800 jets to 120, cuts to the military budget weren’t that extreme that would justify such an insane downscaling
What is this source of that graphic? Us has significantly more than 1854 active fast fighter jets let alone “fighter aircraft”.
But UK has a low number because they removed the Tornado from service while transitioning to the F-35? An Eurofighter and F-35 mix seems to be the best for European countries.
Quality over quantity, also Europe will act together in case of need, so it’s basically the second world power, probably going to be third in a while
Before reunification Germany had almost 5k mbt’s. After reunification we’d have had close to 8k but for some reason some people did not like it.
I didnt knew Baader and Meinhof were into planes
guess you never learn out
Give it ten years and *most* high end jets are replaced by drones
I’m going to press X to doubt that Russia still has over 800 fighter jets as of 2024.
Need to surpass turkey 😤
The Tories are the party that looks after the military…as in they make sure they get rich and continually do white papers on how to cut back more and more.
It’s mind boggling how Greece has so many fighter jets, not to mention their tank reserve. One of the greatest in Europe.
Nikos, ti kaneis malaka?
Now do fighter jets per capita
Something unpleasant happened last time the Luftwaffe snuck up the ranks, can’t for the life of me recall the specifics
Doesn’t the US occupy both 1 (Air Force) and 2 (Navy)?
Iran’s jets are all from the 60s though
Wait what? Hans has more fighter planes than Barry?
This is just a reminder that this country has a history of always having a tiny and badly equipped armed forces in peacetime. Then a war is declared, and we take an absolute hiding for the first year before remembering that you actually need equipment that isn’t manufactured out of balsa wood and cobbled together with wood screws. One day, we might actually learn this lesson, but we clearly haven’t yet.
The cold war was really a highly abnormal anomaly in that history.
Germany has become so much more inefficient since the ‘90s.
Instead of using cheap conscripts to guard military bases, they now employ private security contractors. Similarly, instead of soldiers repairing vehicles, private contractors are tasked with the job.
Instead of continuously purchasing equipment over 20 years to benefit from economies of scale, only a few pieces are ordered once by private contractors, who incidentally ~~bribed~~ donated to a party or hired a politician for a speech and who already earned money to develop the equipment, which all our allies already have in at least similar quality, and if they don’t win the tender, they sue the government and then let the military pay again to fix the rushed and shitty product.
Just look at the mess that the NH90 is: too small, buying too few, unreliable, dozens of years in development, expensive as fuck, unnecessarily complicated and every country has its unique specifications.
Only Norway was intelligent enough to pull the ripcord. Only the damn Norwegians, who are passing life, that’s why they aren’t in the EU.
There is a reason France has nuclear weapons, an aircraft carrier, military bases in other countries, active military operations, a bigger navy, air force, army, … with a similar/smaller budget, even without relying on cheap conscripts, that is viewed as the only solution in Germany.
Owning and maintained, armed and ready to fly are two very different things though.

We would be 3rd if we shared military data.
This doesn’t mention quality of the jets.
UK has state of the art Eurofighter typhoons
Turkey for example has 2nd hand American F-16’s and Phantom II’s which the U.S retired in 1996
Not going to even go into pilot quality and training quality..
“During the [Cold War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War) large amounts of money (including funds intended for the [Swedish nuclear weapons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_nuclear_weapon_program) programme) were spent on the Swedish Air Force and domestic aircraft production. In 1957 Sweden had the world’s fourth most powerful air force,[^([9])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Air_Force#cite_note-9) with about 1,000 modern planes in front-line service.”
In the Cold War era, more than 600 Swedish fighter pilots were killed in crashes during peacetime exercises and training in the 1945–1991 period.”
