Survey shows Swedes divided on NATO membership

  1. Thanks Vladimir for being a great poster boy for NATO enlargement.

No vote down from 43% to 35%.

A round of applause for Vladimir who even after 2 decades of failed foreign policy is still shocked and puzzled to why NATO is so popular.

    A real fucking mystery.

  2. What would joining NATO mean for Sweden? As far as I know (and correct me if I’m wrong) we already have a common defense clause in EU treaties, right?

Or is it to also make sure non-EU states like the US are included, for defensive purposes?

  3. I tried to find a source to back this up but I may have misremembered things, so take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt and perhaps someone more knowledgeable can clarify!

But Sweden can’t join NATO without Finland. I seem to recall there being a mutual agreement, but perhaps it is more of an unofficial thing. Sweden and Finland have practically the same security issues and we have a very tight military cooperation.

Whatever the case I hope it’s true; I wouldn’t want Sweden to join NATO without Finland even if there is a majority for it on the homefront. I’d go so far as to claim (with my limited knowledge) that Finland is the most important ally we have.
