There used to be multiple deliveries of post each day.
Literally first delivery of the day, there used to be two post deliveries a day for 90% of the UK.

Did anyone else mistook those railings for eyes?
There used to be two deliveries a day. Back when we were a proper country, with an empire and that.
It means Hyacinth Bucket will come out and remonstrate with you if you try to put a letter in there with a second class stamp.
You can’t have more than one delivery, only the first one is valid, the rest go back to the depot
Oh those heady days of multiple deliveries of post..now 1 a day is a bit much for the postal service in the UK to manage
Second delivery would/should be handed to someone. The first delivery noone would be around yet.
God gets first class delivery?
I’ll opt for the Holy Trinity Church box then as deliverance is more likely.
It’s for dropping off unwanted babies. You’re only allowed to drop off the first this way. Any subsequent infant abandonments must be done in person.
I remember post at around 8am and 6pm wen I was younger
Wow, Skipton, I was there today.
Love Skipton.
First post. The post that hurts the most.
Okay, so a “church” is a kind of temple or religious building used by a religion called the “Christians”. The “Holy trinity” is their conception of their main deity, consisting of three entities that are also simultaneously one single entity; it’s best not to think about that one too much, I feel. So a “Holy Trinity Church” would be one of those temples, named after the three-in-one deity that they worship.
I’d totally forgotten there used to be two deliveries a day, thanks for the nostalgia!
‘ first class’ deliveries’ only, all other class of post has to be delivered via the ‘ tradesman entrance’ ooooer misse’s
Not a dog poo bin.
I’ve walked past these hundreds of times and never noticed that!
I had completely forgotten about second post!!
We’ve had first delivery, but what about second delivery?
Interesting to think that at its height of use the postal service would do so many deliveries customers could have a conversation during a day via letter.
In the good old days we used to do two deliveries per day.
The first would have been before 09:30 usually, the second between 11 and 1.
The church is asking for these boxes to only be used for the first delivery of the day….I guess they wouldn’t check the box again until the next day.
Sigh, the good old days of 90% staffing, not the 40% we have now…
Imagine when services and utilities were not profited from… half utopia / half bureaucratic nightmare
Back before phones were common there would be multiple postal rounds a day. First delivery was the main one, then depending on where you were the postman could pass by again in the afternoon, and even the evening.
I believe first delivery was the only time of three day when the slow post (todays second class) was delivered, therefore they tend to be the biggest delivery. These boxes were only for first delivery because they were probably then carried on to the offices upstairs or in this case, to the various buildings at the Skipton Castle address.
No problem with daily junk mail
Odd side note, I used to go to primary school with the sons of the owners of Skipton castle. The birthday parties were epic.
I miss those days. I’m still waiting for a birthday card that was posted in August 2022 🤣
