  1. You got this GEN Z, you guys went through a lot of forced introversion the past 3 years, lack of choices, and most of the globally shared human knowledge in your hand. Lot to take in. Gotta stay grounded.

  2. South Korean overweight and NA overweight not the same.

  3. Being over weight is nothing. It’s like “lose 10-20kg” and you’re back to normal

  4. when hasn’t drinking been an issue …. in every culture it has….. only one culture didn’t have alcohol because it was too cold to ferment alcohol and that was the eskimos

  5. US companies: Excellent. Now we can sell them fad diets, pills, celebrity workouts. $$$$$

  6. I see YouTube videos of Korean places deep frying everything and they seem really into burgers now.

  7. The overweight issue is even more jarring because SK has compulsory conscription which in theory means their male citizens should be fitter and slimmer.

  8. To add a little anecdotal context from what I’ve seen while living here for 12 years.

Many students (of all ages) rely heavily on junk food from convenience stores and street vendors for snacks and dinner because they go to hagwons late into the evening.

Overall weight gain does seem higher and I’ve even noticed it reflected in clothes sizes (at least for men). Stores more regularly stock sizes that I only ever saw at “big and tall” type specialty stores 10+ years ago.

Korean youths are significantly taller now. I know this has also made the news lately as well. Even at 6ft I see a lot of high school students who are as tall or taller than me.

For the middle age crowd it seems that extra body weight is a bit more acceptable than before. I actually wonder if the recent fashion trends towards big baggy clothes is related to this or just a coincidence. Ordering food is so ridiculously easy and cheap (and fast). And with the high price of groceries it’s often pretty affordable (especially if you don’t have the time to make a lot of the traditional Korean side dishes which can be time consuming to make and take up a lot of refrigerator space).

The drinking culture here is crazy as ever of course, and I’m sure that adds to the weight gain as well, though it’s likely not just the drinks but the food that you eat with it (in Korea you rarely drink without food served, and it’s often pretty sizable or unhealthy food).

  9. Part of the problem is how the culture is so fast paced with insane work culture. You literally don’t have time to eat some well cooked meals and if you do, well you sure are shit having some nice cozy job. Most people there are pay check to paycheck working 50+ hours. You don’t really have much time to eat and if you do, it’s gotta be pre made or some fast food stuff. This is why some Korean people are getting kinda chubby. It’s made worse because the down time you have is really about guzzling down liquor (soju basically) and beer.

  10. Overweight in south korea is like skinny in america

  11. People who know nothing about korea or it’s culture discussing korea and it’s culture. More at 11.

  12. Those kids are under an insane amount of pressure – I’m not surprised

  13. Maybe there is something wrong with their food culture. It is said that young Koreans have a high incidence of colorectal cancer. While Korean cuisine is good, it contains tons of spicy peppers and they consume a large amount of instant noodles.

  14. Seems like Asia is really trying to catch-up in obesity rates. It’s a huge problem in China and now India has very concerning trends as well.

It’s honestly time to start looking at banning fast food and putting limits on ultra processed foods.

  15. At least the men keep their pores clean and wear makeup. Lol.

  16. 2 weeks in Seoul and I didn’t see a single person exercising in public
