They came for Florida’s sun and sand. They got soaring costs and a culture war.

  1. I seriously don’t understand why anybody chooses to live there. To each their own I suppose, but holy crap, I rarely hear hear people who live there say positive things about it.

  2. This is so sad. Our family grew up going to Destin in the summers and we loved visiting Florida. We’ve wanted to move there for years, but DeSantis and the MAGA culture is ruining it. Guess we’ll find another beach town to retire to.

  3. They’ve got DeSantis, he kept covid out of Florida.
    /s

  4. Unfortunately likely a significant chunk of those leaving are left leaning thereby increasing the likelihood of Republicans getting a stronger grip on Florida.

  5. Florida:

    Come for the oppressive Humidity

Stay for the oppressive Fascist Government

  6. “He recalled showing an elderly woman one property where there were Confederate flags at the gate and swastikas on the fish tank.”

  7. Vote GOP and this is what you get let that be a lesson. Reap what you sow!

  8. I can’t understand how elderly people can retire in Florida.

The healthcare in south Florida is atrocious… and the weather so hot and muggy that it’s impossible to go outside without needed treatment for heatstroke.

  9. Florida isn’t upstate New York, Connecticut or New England. It never was, and yankees who moved there knew better but thought their money could just buy their way around the problem when their money is the core of the problem. Florida is doing what Florida always does, this is Floridian culture, and it’s why New Yorkers normally chose to stay in New York state. It’s the same way when Californian companies move to Texas and have to deal with real Texans and not other rich, white suburban people.

I’m not being dismissive of their criticisms, though. But know this: This is Americans without money. This is America without the colleges, hospitals, or libraries that make liberal democracy possible. This is what America is like 5 hours outside any major urban center and it is getting worse.

  10. If you can’t get insurance or it’s exorbitantly expensive, how can you choose to live there? It is stupidly hot and MAGA too. What’s not to love?

  11. I’m born and raised in South Florida. One of the best things I ever did was leave it.

  12. I grew up there. I wouldn’t wipe my ass with that state. Fuck’em all.

  13. The politics is one of the things actually drawing MAGA people from NY. I live upstate and hear people say all the time they are planning to or hoping to leave for Florida. They think taxes in NY are too high, the education system is awful, and the Governor is allowing criminals out into the streets. A family friend is planning to move his family to Florida from the Seattle area citing the “libs making it unbearable” there and they don’t like the direction education is going in Washington state.

  14. I lived in Florida from 1987-2012. 13 to 37 years old.

I mean this with as much passion as I can give it…..

    I will never return.

  15. I live here and I’m super wary of anyone whose moved here recently.

  16. I just got back from a week in Florida, after not being there for a decade. Wow.

  17. I took a teaching job down in Sarasota in July 2022. The cheapest 1/1 apartment I could find was $1574. By the time the school year was over, the rent was $1730. I, unfortunately, had to move back to Pennsylvania June 2023. Teacher salary with a master’s & cost of living in Florida didn’t match up. 😔

  18. I’m expecting a lot of complaints about the week-long training seminar my organization is having in a couple of months.

  19. The line about car insurance being 50% above national average;

I was always befuddled seeing so many accidents on my way to and from the airport. Clear blue skies, perfect roads, what the heck?

Then a redditor explained it, it’s because seniors drive around half drunk. There’s nothing much to do, so you drink. And apparently, cause accidents.

  20. MAGA has infested Florida led by that weasel DeSantis. No state income tax is a populist charm bracelet, but very stupid public policy. It starves the legislature from having programs that ease the burdens of middle class/working class people. And given the toxicity of its culture and warring against bullshit notions of ‘wokeness’ , book banning , hurricanes, climate change, home insurance spikes, housing unaffordability and the general stench of DeSantis, the bloom is off the rose. The flocking in is now replaced by the torrents of the disillusioned leaving. The decreasing numbers makes everything worse with declining sales/consumption taxes. No state income tax is now a yoke around the neck of DeSantis. And then the guns….the fear of saying the wrong thing to offend the wrong person…

  21. Anacondas, gators, crazy drivers, horrible medical, ridiculous home prices, bigotry on steroids, highest insurance rates in country and probably going to double next year, property taxes extremely high, association fees skyrocketing. Sounds like a good place to stay away from.

  22. Let’s not forget the fact that insurance is VERY hard to get in Florida nowadays too.

  23. >They *voted for* soaring costs and a culture war.

Personal responsibility. Florida needs to get some.

  24. “So many people ask, ‘Why would you move back to Kansas?’ I tell them all the same thing — you’ve got to take your vacation goggles off,” Carter said.”

“Vacation Goggle”. I’m going to remember that term.
