Hi all, bit of a random one…

I was metal detecting on a Scottish farm quite near Glasgow and came across this 1880s coin.

It’s 100% silver and at the top says Ballymena, which I know is a place in Northern Ireland.

I also looked into the name on the coin (David Francey), apparently he was a famous football commentator in Scotland. I think it may have belonged to his father?, who according to this came to Scotland from Ballymena:

“His gift of the gab may have been inherited from his engineer father Tom, who came from Ballymena in Northern Ireland to work in the Clyde shipyards”

Does anyone know where this may have originated in Ballymena, or have any further insights?

Would be much appreciated!

Thank you

  1. Start with local churches and the Orange order or similar, given the level of entwinement that they have with the community up there.

  2. Post it on the Love Ballymena Facebook page or even the Ballymena utd page as I know there’s a few Francey’s go to the matches.

  3. Cool find, sorry I don’t have any info, but keep us posted with your findings, interesting mmmm

  4. People would have passed regularly enough from places like Ballymena to Glasgow, work would have been the main reason, an interesting find. looks like some kind of scientific society award
