  1. HELSINKI, April 2 (Reuters) – **Three 12-year-old children were shot at a school outside the Finnish capital on Tuesday and one of the victims later died, police said, with a 12-year-old fellow pupil suspected of the attack taken into custody.**

The victims were taken to hospital, a police spokesperson told Reuters. At the school, a building had been cordoned off by police. Parents were picking up their children from another school building hundreds of metres (yards) away.

The arrest had happened peacefully, in the suburb of Siltamaki, away from the school. Both the suspect and the weapon were now in police custody, police said.

There were no other suspects for now, police said.

Video circulating on social media and unverified by Reuters showed two police kneeling at the side of the suspected shooter who was lying face down on a sidewalk.

No details about the identities of the children or the condition of the two surviving victims were immediately released.

The shooting took place at the Viertola school in Vantaa, a suburb of Helsinki, which has around 800 pupils from first to ninth grade and a staff of 90, according to the municipality.

Anja Hietamies, the mother of an 11-year-old pupil, told Reuters she received a message from her daughter after the shooting.

“She said they were in a dark, locked classroom, not allowed to speak on the phone but could send messages,” Hietamies said, adding her daughter was scared.

  2. Finland has a population of 5.556 million (2022).

There are approximately 1.5 million registered small firearms in the country. Out of those, 226,000 are short firearms (pistols, revolvers) with the rest being long firearms (rifles, shotguns). 3. School shootings and mass murder provide a very good insight as to what kind of undercurrents are actually happening in a society. This news is telling me that Finland is starting to have America problems.

  4. [According to the police](https://poliisi.fi/-/ampumavalikohtaus-vantaalla-viertolan-koululla) there are three injured victims. The suspected shooter is in police custody. All the victims and the suspect are 13 years old and students at the school.

EDIT: New information from the police. The suspect and the victims are 12 years old, not 13 as previously reported.

EDIT2: One of the victims has died. Two seriously injured.

  5. Police special forces arrived to the location in 2 minutes after first 911 call

  6. They probably didn’t ask that guy during the “happiest country on earth”-survey

  7. How could they have an American style school shooting in Finland? That is sad..

  8. I’m sorry to be that guy, but I have family in Helsinki… Was the shooter Russian? I don’t know what would be worse, if he was or wasn’t…

    Sorry, enough r/NCD for today.

  9. All these damn school shootings prevent the cops from playing RDR2!

  10. I am Finnish the new government and the changes they have made are too blame for this.

  11. I guess Finland will not be chosen as “happiest country” in the world next year because of this incident.
