He won’t be standing again so. This new Cabinet is hardly going to be the cream of the crop. We’ll have Senators as senior ministers the way it’s going.
Sure it was obvious he wasn’t getting picked. This just means he was able to say ‘I dropped out’ as opposed to what actually happened, Simon H dropping him. I wonder will there be more honourable drops over the week?
The jargon these people in media and politics invent: “step aside, step down, step away”.
Lanigan’s Ball preposterousness.
Talk on the Matt Cooper/Ivan Yates pod that he has an executive role with Google lined up, off to do a Nick Clegg
As per Gavan Reilly: “Coveney evasive on Radio 1 about whether he’ll stand again in Cork South-Central. “It’s not a yes and it’s not a no”
There goes their ‘safe pair of hands’.
He got such a handy interview on the RTE morning show.
No one said ” This looks like the actions of a government who are so incredibly unpopular they need to clear the ranks entirely”.
How they’ve ended up with Simon Harris as leader is beyond me
This sounds like a fancier way of saying “come out of the closet”.
“If we go in the direction the rats are going that’s good enough for me”
That is a big, big loss.
If it’s not certain he’s running in the GE then it makes political sense to free up a spot in the Cabinet for someone who will be.
Not sure it does much for the competency of the government, mind.
I live in his constituency. I wouldn’t vote for him but he’s generally popular in the area.
Definitely a bad sign for FG if someone as high up in the party as him is stepping out.
Fine Gael is absolutely shattered, they don’t even have the next generation lined up and ready for this coming election.
He’s getting put while he can rats and sinking ship comes to mind
Jesus Coveney was one of the only decent TDs as part of Fine Gaels government. They really are screwed. I don’t know what talent he’s talking about. And another thing, Coveney was the only high ranking minister not from the greater Dublin Area or the East. There’ll be fuck all done for the outside areas now
we all thought FF were finished but it turns out its actually FG. Massive error giving Varadkar the leadership gig over Coveney. If hes gone then id imagine donohue will follow in time which would be disastrous for FG. Hes the only fella with a brain in there.
Can we get an election already. It’s a joke that Harris is now Taoiseach if he wants the job get the votes.
Off to some cushy job as CEO of a charity or NGO no doubt.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we are into an autumn general election tbh. Wheels are coming off.
Coveney seemed not too bad. Better than others at the least. Surely this isn’t a good sign.
Been a whirlwind last few days in Irish politics on both sides of the border.
My youngest is home sick today. Mentioned this to her. She pulls out her mobile, and says “hang on need to check something… OK, he’s still got a Twitter account.”
God help me, I’ve raised the sassiest little shit.
Another rat jumping the sinking ship perhaps.
Maybe some politicians know that Harris probably won’t get the votes after all and there will be a general election. In that situation. I can understand why Coveney would want to distance himself from that Shit show.
My initial thought was Simon Harris who he allegedly doesn’t get on with is dropping him from the new cabinet. So he stepped aside to get ahead of that
IF that’s the case he’ll be back in a bit. But people in the know here are saying he has a job lined up at Google and I kind of believe that too
Or maybe he’s keeping his options open and seeing how all of this plays out with the local and European elections, etc
14 of 33 Fine Gael TDs aren’t running in the next election, including the top two in the party.
Edit: Varadkar and Coveney haven’t confirmed but both look unlikely to stand in the next election.
‘Yeah, I think the party is renewing itself with a fresh approach and policies’ – Get Fucked.
Great. Who needs credible ministers anyway. This government has an incredibly lightweight feel to it.
Considering over a quarter of their Dail party are quitting and everyone is expecting obliteration for the next election, it is a wonder why nobody tried to get Varadkar removed as leader. Nobody had the courage to find their voice over the last 4 years.
That’s not good at all. I was hoping he’d be the next Taoiseach, he was only competent person left.
Fine gael have alienated their core support base for short term gain, now reaping what they sowed with their lurch towards the left. Coveney should have won the leadership, that’s what their supporters wanted, now they’re a husk of a party outside of Dublin.

Coveney saves his mana while the crayon eater takes the full force of the electorate
Coveney said of the Commission on the Defence Forces that it was the most important work he had done in govt. As soon as Mícheál Martin came back to Defence and DFA he set up the Forum to reassert approach of the decades long degradation of the DF.
By his own criterion Coveney has failed. And oddly enough the reason is the so called shared island mirage which demands an end to neutrality and a submission of Irish defence needs to those of Britain.
It will take more time before delusion lifts generally but it will.
A few big hitters jumping ship, reminds me of when Bertie stepped down not long before the financial crash. Wonder what they know that we don’t.

Going of his own accord, or before being pushed?
