Based on the initial findings from an IDF inquiry into the crowd crush incident in northern Gaza, the majority of casualties resulted from individuals being trampled and struck by aid trucks.

The incident unfolded around 4:00 a.m. when approximately 30 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid reached the Gaza City coast to distribute food to Palestinians in the Rimal neighborhood. Following the trucks’ passage through an IDF checkpoint in central Gaza, a large number of Palestinians surged towards them, causing a stampede that resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities, some of which were due to individuals being run over by the trucks, as indicated by the investigation.

According to the IDF’s preliminary findings, some trucks managed to proceed further north, where armed individuals reportedly attacked the convoy near Rimal and engaged in looting.

As the last truck in the convoy was rushed by dozens of Palestinians, they subsequently moved towards an IDF tank and troops stationed at a military checkpoint, notes the investigation. An officer in the area ordered warning shots to be fired into the air when the Palestinians were within a short distance, and gunfire was directed at the legs of those persisting in approaching the troops.

The IDF has been coordinating multiple aid deliveries to northern Gaza in recent weeks, with this particular one being larger than usual. The military is now actively seeking solutions to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
