  1. Our defense is outstanding this season! With 14 goals conceded in 30 games, we have the best defense of the top 5 leagues and that by quite some margin.

Edit: The Top 10 from the top 5 leagues:

    |Team|Matches Played|Goals Against|GA/MP|
    |:-|:-|:-|:-|
    |Inter|30|14|0,466666667|
    |Real Madrid|30|20|0,666666667|
    |B04 Leverkusen|27|19|0,703703704|
    |Stade Brest|27|20|0,740740741|
    |Juventus|30|24|0,8|
    |OGC Nice|27|22|0,814814815 |
    |Arsenal|29|24|0,827586207|
    |Bologna|30|25|0,833333333|
    |PSG|27|23|0,851851852|
    |Torino|30|26|0,866666667|

  2. Kudos to Inzaghi for the defense upgrade, especially compared to last year. The only player I miss from that squad is Hakimi, that Dimarco-Hakimi duo would be devastating.

  3. Our 59 GD is also impressive, the best among the other competitive leagues as well.

  4. It’s quite crazy that the defence is better, you’d expect it to be worse given how we play.

  5. I remember that, on our Scudetto season with Conte, up until around the end of the CL group stages we had this huge issue where we kept leaking goals left and right, we’d get scored against once or twice per match. Then (as per a Bastoni interview) our players sat back with Conte and discussed how that was not sustainable.

In a way this mirrors our last season with Inzaghi. We were not really defending great last season, we conceded one or two goals per match for an extended period of time and it was getting to the point where it was genuinely concerning. But once we managed to “make things click” around March last year, we improved MASSIVELY when it comes to defending.

Also, may or may not be a controversial opinion, but our midfield sometimes is almost more important than our defense when it comes to how we defend. Handling opponents’ transitions, distributing the pressing as we move back into defensive formations and whatnot. Last season, Brozovic got injured and then until we qualified for the QF he looked like he couldn’t be arsed to focus, and it showed in how many goals we leaked and how many times we got caught off guard in our defense.

tl;dr: It’s thanks to our tactics clicking better and to our midfield working well that we’ve been managing to have such a solid defense this season, just like it happened back in Conte’s Scudetto season.
